Mercedes-Benz will continue production of vehicles with ICE
Mercedes-Benz, despite the active development of electric vehicles, does not plan to abandon traditional engines. On the contrary, the company has revised its timelines and now expects that vehicles with ICE will remain in its lineup longer than previously planned.
Parallel development of technologies
This strategy is already reflected in the brand’s future models. The next generations of cars will be offered in both electric and conventional versions. Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius, in a comment for Auto Motor und Sport, called this a “course correction”.
“High-tech internal combustion engines will last longer than we expected. The smartest approach in the current situation is to develop both technologies,” stated Källenius.
Update of the electric lineup
Although the exact timelines for phasing out ICE are not named, they will definitely remain until the next decade. In parallel, the company is preparing a number of new electric vehicles on the MB.EA platform with support for fast charging up to 320 kW.
Mercedes is already demonstrating flexibility in its strategy – electric versions, such as the GLC, will be sold in parallel with traditional models. This resembles the approach of Porsche, which in North America offers the electric Macan alongside the conventional one.
Recent years have shown that the transition to electric vehicles is more complex than expected. Infrastructure, cost, and buyer preferences in different regions are forcing automakers to seek a balance between innovation and tradition. Mercedes seems to have found its formula – a gradual update of the lineup while preserving key models for different markets.
