Mercedes Introduces New VLE Electric Van
Mercedes-Benz has announced the new VLE electric van, which is likely to become the successor to the V-Class model. The vehicle is built on the new VAN.EA platform and will be available to buyers in North America. The van is designed for eight passengers, and a more luxurious VLS version will join it later.
The manufacturer has released the first official images of the model, which show a massive radiator grille, large headlights, and a compact design. A feature of the VLE is its high window line, giving it a more modern look compared to its predecessor. The rear is equipped with a large spoiler and vertical taillights, which, however, are temporary for the test version.
Two VLE prototypes covered 1090 kilometers from Stuttgart to Rome with just two 15-minute charging stops.
Technical Features
Mercedes has confirmed that the new van will feature 800-volt technology, a 22 kW charging device, and an updated operating system. The range is expected to be over 500 kilometers, and a Level 2 semi-autonomous driving system will also be available. The implementation of Level 3 autonomy is planned by the end of the decade.
The model is positioned as an ideal option for family trips or VIP transfers. In North America, China, and Canada, the van will be sold as the “Grand Limousine,” emphasizing its premium status. The manufacturer promises that the VLS will become the new benchmark for luxury in its segment.
Despite limited information, test drives have shown the model’s high efficiency, particularly on challenging routes through the Alps. The rear-axle steering system significantly eased maneuvering in urban environments, making the VLE a practical choice for various usage scenarios.
