A New Interpretation of the Legendary Roadster
For many, the Mazda MX-5 remains the perfect choice, yet numerous enthusiasts dream of more power. This very desire became one of the reasons for the success of the British company Rocketeer, which has been creating V6-powered MX-5 versions for years, inspired by classic 1960s roadsters. Now the company presents a completely new, limited-edition special project called Keiyo.
The Philosophy of Lightness and Power
The name “Keiyo” translates from Japanese as “light,” which fully aligns with the car’s concept. The manufacturer aims to achieve a maximum weight of just 850 kg, which completely corresponds to the original MX-5 ideology. However, the secret of this Mazda is not only in the use of lightweight materials.
Rocketeer also strives to achieve a figure of 370 horsepower using its familiar V6 engine. This is a significantly modified version of the old 3.0-liter AJ30 engine from Jaguar.
Engine Heritage and Analog Experience
Despite its humble origins, the AJ30 engine has special DNA. As noted by Top Gear, its roots trace back to the Ford Duratec V6 engine, which was initially developed by Porsche and later received cylinder heads from Cosworth.
In the Keiryo model, this engine is combined with an obsessive pursuit of lightness and analog driving. Rocketeer describes the car as its “ultimate interpretation” of what a true driver’s car should be: no turbos, no heavy electronics, and unnecessary complications. Just 375 horsepower, a mass lower than the new Caterham Seven 420, and a focus on mechanical sensations, not digital additions.
Comparison with Supercars
This combination of low mass and high power places the Keiyo in an elite category. Its power-to-weight ratio will be on the same level as cars like the Ferrari F40, Lamborghini Huracan, and McLaren 620R. Not bad for something that began its life as a friendly Mazda roadster.
Expectations and Prospects
Full information regarding price and detailed technical specifications has not yet been released. Rocketeer directs interested buyers to contact them directly for details. However, if the Keiryo even comes close to its stated goals, it could become the most impressive version of the MX-5 ever to appear on UK roads.
The Keiyo project demonstrates that even in the era of electric vehicles and complex hybrid systems, there is still a place for mechanical purity and simplicity. This is not just a tuning job, but a thorough rethinking of the sports car concept, where every kilogram and every horsepower is subordinated to one goal — a direct connection between the driver and the road. The success of such initiatives will depend not only on technical execution but also on whether there are enough adherents of this philosophy willing to invest in a car created primarily for emotions, not for spec sheet numbers or daily comfort.
