New Toyota FJ Cruiser: What is Known
Patent drawings provided the first look at the future Toyota FJ Cruiser, whose design strongly resembles the official teaser from 2023. The full debut of the off-roader will take place in the spring of 2026, and it will receive a body-on-frame construction.
Update: Sources from Japan report that the debut of the compact Land Cruiser has been postponed to the spring of next year. New details about the powertrains have also emerged.
Design and Features
The patent image confirms that the FJ Cruiser will be a compact SUV with five doors and a boxy shape. It inherited features from the Toyota teaser, including LED optics, massive fenders, and a vertical rear end with a spare wheel. The lower part of the body will have plastic cladding, emphasizing its off-road capabilities.
Reportedly, the model’s length will be about 4.5 m, making it a representative of the compact class. The IMV-0 platform, which is expected to be used, will also form the basis for the new Hilux and Fortuner.
Technical Details
The body-on-frame construction promises excellent off-road capability compared to unibody competitors. Among the possible engines are a 2.7-liter gasoline engine or a 2.8-liter turbo diesel with a mild hybrid system. Transmission options will include a 6-speed or 8-speed automatic transmission with all-wheel drive.
Although the accuracy of the patent image has not yet been confirmed, it provides an idea of Toyota’s development direction. Production issues, including a certification scandal, are expected to have affected the postponement of the premiere.
Despite the delays, interest in the FJ Cruiser continues to grow, especially among off-road enthusiasts. If Toyota maintains its traditional reliability and off-road capability, this model could become a real hit in its segment.
