New Restrictions on Electric Bicycles and Motorcycles in Scottsdale
The city of Scottsdale in Arizona is introducing stricter rules regarding the use of electric bicycles and motorcycles. This is due to the increase in the number of accidents that have injured both pedestrians and the drivers themselves. The new regulations are intended to limit the use of these vehicles and reduce the risk of injuries.
Starting July 1, all electric motorcycles must be registered and have the appropriate documentation for driving on city roads. This will particularly affect teenagers, who were previously able to freely ride powerful models such as the Sur Ron Lightbee without a license or insurance.
Age Restrictions and Mandatory Rules
Under the new law (Ordinance No. 4680), individuals under the age of 16 are prohibited from operating Class 3 electric bicycles, which can reach speeds over 21 mph (34 km/h). Only models with a lower maximum speed are permitted.
“Unfortunately, most injuries are quite serious – often head injuries,” noted Dr. Anthony Pickett from Phoenix Children’s Hospital.
The risk is increased due to speed, the lack of helmets, and unpredictable situations on the road, such as potholes or animals running onto the roadway.
Seller Responsibility and the Future of New Rules
Stores are now required to label powerful electric bicycles and inform buyers about the restrictions. Violations are punishable by a $100 fine, but the effectiveness of these measures is still in question. If the situation does not improve, the city may strengthen the penalties.
Although the new rules may seem strict, they are aimed at protecting the safety of all road users. The experience of Scottsdale may serve as an example for other cities that are also facing the problem of uncontrolled use of electric transportation.
