Mitsubishi prepares a new electric SUV for Europe
Mitsubishi has announced a fully electric SUV named Eclipse Cross. The model, designed specifically for the European market, will debut in September, with sales starting in 2025. The vehicle will be produced at a Renault factory, as it is built on the same platform as the Scenic E-Tech.
The new Eclipse Cross will join Mitsubishi’s lineup of electrified models based on Renault’s technology. Among them are the Colt (an equivalent of the Clio), ASX (based on the Captur), and Grandis (a rebranded Renault Symbioz). However, the company continues to develop its own projects, such as the Outlander.
Design and technical features
So far, only fragments of the design have been officially revealed: wheels, grille, door handles, and rear emblems. The front end will feature an updated Dynamic Shield style, developed by Mitsubishi’s German team. The interior promises to be spacious, with two rows of seats and a 545-liter trunk. Equipment includes a Google-based multimedia system and advanced driver assistance systems.
The new Eclipse Cross will initially launch in a long-wheelbase version, with a mid-size variant arriving in 2026. The car is expected to feature 60 kWh and 87 kWh batteries, as well as two powertrain options—168 hp and 215 hp.
Plans for other markets
For North America, Mitsubishi is preparing a separate electric model based on the upcoming Nissan Leaf, set to debut in 2026. The fate of the conventional Eclipse Cross with an internal combustion engine remains uncertain, as the model has been on the market for a long time and requires an update.
Production of the European Eclipse Cross will begin in France, at the same factory where the Scenic E-Tech is assembled. This is another step in the collaboration between Mitsubishi and Renault, which has been actively growing recently. Simultaneously, the Japanese brand continues to invest in its own developments, demonstrating its commitment to remaining competitive across various segments.
