Small hot hatches have a special appeal. Affordable, maneuverable, and surprisingly powerful, they often deliver more fun than cars twice their size and price. Models like the Ford Fiesta ST and the third-generation Renault Clio have become icons of this segment. Now, the Hyundai i20 N has joined them, and in Australia, it has virtually no direct competitors.
Ford no longer sells the Fiesta ST, and Renault has discontinued the RS version of the current Clio, leaving the i20 N without serious rivals in its class. Its main competitor could only be considered another Hyundai model – the i30 N.
Although the i30 N is larger and more powerful, it shares with the i20 N a similar approach to combining performance and character at a reasonable price. Judged by the “fun per dollar” criterion, the i20 N is one of the best offers on the market.

Hyundai has been selling the i20 N for several years, but for the 2025 model year, it has been updated. The changes are minor, but this Korean hatchback remains a very attractive option.
The most noticeable external differences are a new radiator grille with a different pattern and matte black finish, complemented by dark emblems. Updated 18-inch wheels have also appeared, and the interior has gained support for Bluelink services, wireless updates, and LED ambient lighting.
The technical part remains unchanged. The i20 N is still equipped with a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine producing 201 hp, which can temporarily deliver up to 304 Nm of torque in overboost mode. Although these figures are lower than those of the larger i30 N with its 276 hp, on the road the smaller model feels almost as vibrant.
The i20 N is hard to beat on price. In Australia, it starts from AU$35,500 (~$22,400), while the i30 N with a manual transmission starts from AU$50,000 (~$31,600). Unfortunately for American buyers, this model was never and will never be available in their market due to weak demand for compact cars.
Interior: Functional, But Without Frills

The interior of the i20 N reflects its affordable price category. Soft materials are rare here, with plastic predominating. However, the layout is well-thought-out, and the technical equipment is high-level.
Standard equipment includes a 10.25-inch multimedia screen and an identical digital instrument cluster. The interface is user-friendly but is starting to feel a bit dated compared to modern Chinese equivalents.
The seats are upholstered in fabric, the steering wheel is a comfortable size and has buttons for quick mode selection. Despite its compact size, the rear space is sufficient for comfort.
Incredible Driving Impressions

The i20 N continues to impress with its dynamics. For its money, it offers an unparalleled driving experience that is hard to find even in more expensive models.
The 1.6-liter engine requires high revs to unlock its potential – below 4,000 rpm it feels weak. But after that mark, you feel a real surge of power, similar to the operation of VTEC in Hondas.
In a straight line, the car accelerates to 100 km/h in 7 seconds, but the i20 N’s true element is winding roads. It comes equipped with special Pirelli P Zero tires and a mechanical limited-slip differential, ensuring excellent handling.
Among the settings, there are three modes for the engine, steering, exhaust system, and other systems. Fuel consumption is around 7.1 L/100 km.
The Last Chance
2025 will likely be the last year for the i20 N. Production for Europe has already ceased, and Australia remains one of the few markets where this model is still available. Future compact hot hatches from Hyundai, if they appear, will most likely be electric.
Despite some shortcomings, the i20 N remains an outstanding driver’s car. It is fast, exciting, and offers excellent value for money. This model will undoubtedly go down in history as one of the brightest representatives of its class.
