BMW’s Diesel Past Has Caused New Problems in America

Engine Cooling System Problem

Although BMW has long stopped selling diesel cars in the US market, their past attempt to conquer this segment is again attracting attention due to a serious problem. Over 100 BMW 328d models from 2018 are being recalled due to a potential fire hazard under the hood.

Recall Key Points

Technical Fault Details

The manufacturer reports that in one case, signs of thermal impact were recorded on Series 3 vehicles, and the investigation revealed a problem with the exhaust gas recirculation system cooler manufactured in Korea. This module, installed on the affected 328d models, may have an internal leak of glycol coolant.

If this happens, the fluid mixes with soot and sediment characteristic of diesel engines, which can lead to smoldering particles. Over time, this causes the intake manifold to melt and increases the likelihood of fire.

Problem Scale and Manufacturer Actions

A total of 112 vehicles are involved in the United States, including 23 328d Sportwagon station wagons produced from September 7 to December 10, 2018, and 89 328d sedans manufactured from September 6 to October 11, 2018.

Owners of affected vehicles may notice a warning symbol on the instrument panel indicating coolant loss, an unpleasant smell from the exhaust, smoke, or unusual noises from the engine side, as well as reduced power.

Investigation and Resolution Plans

BMW reported the problem on July 30 after an ignition incident with a 2018 model. Further analysis showed that the EGR cooler is the probable cause, and that several affected vehicles were missed during a previous recall campaign in November 2021.

Owners will receive recall notifications starting December 5. Dealers are instructed to replace the EGR cooler, check the intake manifold for damage and replace it if necessary. Cleaning of the EGR pipe connecting the cooler to the manifold will also be performed.
