The largest steel arch bridge is 93 years old

On this very day, March 19, 1932, the opening of the Sydney Harbor Bridge took place. Today, together with the Sydney Opera House, it is one of the city’s main tourist attractions. This bridge is the highest steel arch span on Earth, with a height of 134 meters from the top to the water level. Until 2006, this span was also famous as the widest in the world — with a span of 48.8 meters.

The total length of the Sydney Harbor Bridge is 1149 meters, making it the tenth-longest arch bridge on the planet. The metal part of the structure alone weighs no less than 58,800 tons — the construction is held together by six million (!) rivets.
