Cost of Car Insurance
Monthly loan or lease payments play a key role in choosing the next vehicle, however, many do not take into account how much the cost of insurance can vary for similar models. One company helped shed light on this topic by compiling a list of SUVs and pickups that cost the least to insure.
Mercury Insurance Research
California-based Mercury Insurance lists 10 models in each category, and while there is some overlap, it’s fair to say that the pickup and SUV lists are dominated by different brands. What they have in common is the complete absence of electric vehicles, which often cost significantly more to insure compared to internal combustion engine vehicles.

The Most Affordable Pickups to Insure
First place in the pickup category is taken by the Chevrolet Colorado LT, followed by the Silverado C3500. Next are the Ford Maverick and Ranger, which tied for third place, the slow-selling Hyundai Santa Cruz takes fourth place, and the Toyota Tundra CrewMax is fifth. The remaining five positions are occupied by the Ford F-150, Toyota Tacoma, Ford F-350 Super Duty, Dodge and Ram 1500, and GMC Canyon.

The Most Affordable SUVs to Insure
In the SUV rating, the Hyundai Santa Fe leads in affordability. The Honda Pilot is satisfied with second place, but it is not the brand’s last appearance on the list. The Chevrolet Blazer takes third place, the only one for this manufacturer in the SUV table, and the Sportage is the highest among the three utility models from the company that made it into the top 10.
Fifth place goes to the Honda Passport, sixth to the Ford Escape, followed by a battle between Kia and Honda for the remaining four positions. The Soul takes seventh place, followed by the HR-V, CR-V, and Kia Sorento. The absence of Toyota is noticeable, despite its status as one of the most popular SUV brands.

Research Limitations
Mercury has been publishing this research for the tenth year, which would be much more interesting and useful if it included sample premiums for the average driver to provide context on how much more affordable the top models are, as well as an explanation of why they have lower insurance premiums. Perhaps this will be taken into account next year.
It is worth noting that such ratings can be useful for car buyers looking to reduce overall ownership costs. However, the cost of insurance depends on many factors, including region, driver’s age, driving history, and specific vehicle characteristics, so general lists may not reflect individual situations. Furthermore, the absence of electric vehicles in the rating may change in the future as their popularity grows and safety technologies improve.
