Following yesterday’s information leak, Rivian has officially unveiled its new R2 electric vehicle. The model will go on sale this spring starting at $57,990, although the base variant is planned for release at the end of 2027 with an estimated price of around $45,000.
Power and Specifications
The vehicle is built on an entirely new platform. The first version to hit the market will be the Performance variant with all-wheel drive and two electric motors. Its combined power output is 656 horsepower, and torque is 825 Nm. Thanks to this, the crossover accelerates from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 3.6 seconds.
Rivian’s R2 packs up to 656 hp and hits 60 mph in 3.6 seconds.
The model received an 87.9 kWh battery pack, providing a range of up to 330 miles (531 km). Fast charging allows replenishing the charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 29 minutes. Among the technical features are a semi-active suspension and eight drive modes: All-Purpose, All-Terrain, Conserve, Launch, Rally, Snow, Soft Sand, and Sport.
Exterior and Interior
The base trim includes an Esker Silver exterior paint, 21-inch Liquid Tungsten wheels, Compass Yellow brake calipers, and matching emblems. The vehicle is also equipped with matrix LED headlights, integrated tow hooks, and rear doors with a drop-down glass window.
The cabin features Black Crater Signature trim with Birch wood accents. The front seats have 12-way power adjustment, heating, and ventilation. The rear seats and steering wheel are also heated. Standard equipment includes a premium audio system with nine speakers and a flashlight built into the driver’s door.
A wide range of options is available, including Borealis, Catalina Cove, Forest Green, Glacier White, Half Moon Grey, and Midnight paint colors. These can be combined with black 20-inch wheels and all-terrain tires. Customers can also order a Coastal Cloud Signature interior, a towing package for up to 1996 kg, and a subscription to the Autonomy+ system.
Trims and Pricing
The first vehicles will be available with a limited Launch Package. It includes a lifetime Autonomy+ subscription, a towing package, an anodized green key fob, and an exclusive Launch Green exterior color.
R2 Premium
The R2 Premium trim, priced at $53,990, will appear later this year. It features a lower-powered all-wheel-drive system — 456 hp and 727 Nm of torque. Acceleration to 60 mph takes 4.6 seconds, and the range remains at 330 miles. The vehicle is equipped with smaller 20-inch wheels and offers five drive modes.
R2 Standard Long Range
The R2 Standard Long Range trim, priced at $48,490, is planned for release in the first half of 2027. The base model has a single rear motor with 355 hp, providing acceleration to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds and a range of up to 345 miles. An all-wheel-drive system similar to the R2 Premium is optionally available. To reduce the price, several features were removed from this model: the enhanced lighting system, tow hooks, and the drop-down rear window. Wheel size was reduced to 19 inches. The cabin features a simpler five-speaker audio system, the front passenger seat has only 8-way adjustment, and heating is available only for the front seats and steering wheel. The door-mounted flashlight and off-road drive mode are also absent.
R2 Standard Short Range
The most accessible model, the R2 Standard Short Range, will appear at the end of 2027 at a price of around $45,000. Details are currently limited, but the manufacturer promises a range of over 275 miles.
Space and Capabilities
The R2 turned out to be quite spacious. Rear passenger legroom is 1026 mm. Cargo volume is 813 liters, and with the rear seats folded, it increases to 2248 liters. Additionally, the vehicle has two glove compartments and a front trunk (frunk) with a volume of 147 liters.
The electric crossover can travel up to 330 miles per charge.
The crossover demonstrates good geometry for off-road travel: ground clearance of 244 mm, approach, departure, and breakover angles are 25°, 26°, and 20.6° respectively. The model is equipped with 32-inch tires and is nearly 907 kg lighter than its older sibling, the R1.
Among other features are a panoramic glass roof, digital key technology, and a “Haptic Halo” steering wheel with two large touch-sensitive scroll wheels. The vehicle has a NACS standard charging port, as well as a “Field Outlet” that converts the charging port into an electrical outlet with two 120V outputs.
Rivian has already opened pre-orders for the R2 with a refundable $100 deposit.
Multiple trims launch first, with a cheaper version due in 2027.
The market launch strategy for the new model is interesting: initially, customers receive the most powerful and well-equipped version, while the most affordable variant will appear only after a few years. This allows the company to attract early technology adopters and increase margins at the start, while simultaneously shaping the market and creating demand for more budget-friendly models in the future. The success of the R2 could be decisive for Rivian in the battle for a place in the competitive electric crossover market.
