New Cupra Leon VZ TCR spotted at the Nürburgring
Last year, Cupra announced plans to create the most powerful front-wheel-drive Leon in history. It is expected to appear at the end of this year, with production limited to 499 units.
Since then, little has been heard about the model, but recently spy photographers managed to capture the Leon VZ TCR on the Nürburgring track. The prototype, photographed without camouflage, closely resembles the standard Leon VZ but features a front splitter and a large rear wing. These are complemented by lightweight alloy wheels paired with a high-performance Akebono braking system with six-piston calipers.
More: Cupra creates a hot hatch that considers itself a race car
Although this looks like a Leon VZ TCR prototype, it lacks several previously announced elements. These include sportier side skirts, body graphics, and carbon fiber rearview mirrors. The car also lacks a copper exhaust system and TCR badges.
Interior and technical specifications
Spy photographers were unable to look inside, but Cupra has previously reported that the model will feature CUPBucket front seats with four-point seat belts. More importantly, there will be removable rear seats, a strut brace, and an integrated mesh. Buyers will also find a laser-engraved serial number on the door panel.
Under the hood is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 321 hp (239 kW / 325 PS) and 310 lb-ft (420 Nm) of torque. It is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, allowing the hot hatch to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 5.6 seconds, after which it reaches an “unlimited top speed.” Other features include adaptive chassis and an electronically controlled front differential lock.
This prototype, although lacking all the announced details, demonstrates that Cupra is serious about creating a true track car adapted for public roads. The limited production run of 499 units and the focus on racing heritage make it desirable for collectors. The absence of some elements on the prototype may indicate that the company is still refining the design, or that this is a test mule that does not reflect the final version. Given the technical specifications, the Leon VZ TCR will become one of the most powerful front-wheel-drive hatchbacks on the market, challenging models such as the Honda Civic Type R and Hyundai i30 N.
