Updated BMW iX1 to receive Neue Klasse style and new technologies
BMW recently unveiled the new i3 sedan but is already actively working on its next electric novelty. This refers to the fully updated compact crossover iX1, fresh spy photos of which demonstrate a radical change in its visual direction.
The brand’s smallest electric SUV appears to be taking significant stylistic cues from the larger iX3, scaling down its design and adapting the Neue Klasse language, which is gradually being introduced across the BMW model range.
Moving away from large kidney grilles
Despite the camouflage, some key design changes are immediately noticeable. The most obvious is the abandonment of the current model’s massive ‘kidney’ radiator grilles in favor of small vertical elements. Similar grilles have already appeared on the iX3 and the new X5.

The new grille will be accompanied by updated headlights and a redesigned bumper. The side profile looks noticeably cleaner due to the absence of complex lines and the use of flush door handles. The rear is concealed, but fragments of the new LED taillights can be discerned.
Shared technical base with the iX3
Initial reviews indicate that the second-generation iX3 became BMW’s first competitive response to the wave of Chinese electric SUVs. It is equipped with a sixth-generation battery and electric motors, providing best-in-class range and performance figures.
The new iX1 is likely to use similar innovative technologies to significantly improve its characteristics compared to the existing model. It is not yet known if it will receive the same 108.7 kWh battery as the iX3, given its smaller size. However, if it inherits the 800-volt electrical architecture, it would enable charging speeds of up to 400 kW.
Expected interior and cabin
These shots do not show the interior of the new iX1, but photos from last December revealed the basic interior layout, identical to the iX3. It includes the new panoramic iDrive system and a tilted central multimedia display. In all likelihood, the unconventional four-spoke steering wheel from the iX3 will also become standard, as in the new i3 sedan.
The transition to the Neue Klasse platform for compact models like the iX1 is a logical step for BMW in the context of intensifying competition, especially from Asian manufacturers. The emphasis on clean design without excessive chrome and aggressive lines aligns with modern trends, while the technical content is expected to ensure competitiveness not only in dynamics but also in practical aspects such as charging time. The early success of the iX3 gives reason to expect that the smaller model can replicate this success, offering customers a high level of technology in a compact format.
