The smallest Hyundai Ioniq resembles a compact hot hatchback

Presentation of the Hyundai Concept THREE

Hyundai is preparing to debut a new concept at the IAA Mobility exhibition in Munich, which resembles a compact hatchback in the official teasers. The concept, named Concept THREE, is expected to evolve into the production electric vehicle Ioniq 3, becoming the first compact EV of the Ioniq sub-brand.

The teasers show full-width LED light bars at the front and rear, as well as a spoiler in the shape of a ducktail. A side sketch depicts a low hatchback with sharp aerodynamic elements and large wheels. According to Hyundai, the ‘Aero Hatch’ typology rethinks the silhouette of compact electric vehicles.

Design and Style

The model incorporates the ‘Art of Steel’ design language, first introduced by the Initium FCEV concept last year. Previously published teasers suggest the car will have full-width LED light bars for the headlights and taillights, similar to the updated Ioniq 6 sedan. Also noticeable are sporty bumpers, a pronounced front spoiler, widened fenders, and an integrated spoiler.

Simon Loasby, Senior Vice President and Head of the Hyundai Design Center, noted that the concept’s goal was to “rethink the compact EV from the ground up,” describing it as a “sculpture with beautiful proportions.”

Production Model and Expectations

Recent spy photos have captured a camouflaged prototype, which is likely the future Hyundai Ioniq 3 (previously referred to as Ioniq 2). Some elements align with the teasers, although they have been toned down for production. However, a potential N version in the future with similar body kit and increased performance cannot be ruled out.

The new EV will become the smallest member of the Ioniq family. It will most likely position itself between the Inster and Kona Electric crossovers, becoming a zero-emission alternative to the conventional i20 and i30 hatchbacks.

Technical Features and Competitors

The Hyundai Ioniq 3 will likely use the E-GMP architecture shared with the Kia EV2 and EV3 crossovers. This means it could be equipped with a single electric motor producing 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS), powered by a 58.3 kWh or 81.4 kWh battery pack. Furthermore, the platform is compatible with dual-motor configurations.

The Ioniq 3 will compete with other electric subcompact hatchbacks, such as the Renault 5 E-Tech, Nissan Micra, Peugeot E-208, Opel Corsa Electric, Citroen e-C3, and BYD Dolphin. It will also be a competitor for the production version of the VW ID.2all concept and the upcoming Cupra Raval.

Market Launch Timeline

According to recent reports, the production model may appear on the market in mid-2026. Before that, we will see the concept at the IAA Mobility 2025 exhibition, which will take place in Munich, Germany, from September 9 to 14.

This concept demonstrates Hyundai’s growing focus on the compact electric vehicle segment, which is becoming increasingly popular in Europe. Considering the trends towards smaller car sizes and increased efficiency, the Ioniq 3 could become a key player in the market, combining dynamic design with practicality. Competition in this segment is intensifying significantly, which will foster the development of innovations and the accessibility of electric vehicles for the general public.
