The smallest coupe-crossover from BMW prepares for a new era

Updated BMW X2 M40: first spy photos and details

Spy photographers captured the updated BMW X2 at the beginning of the month, and now they have managed to shoot its more powerful M version. The model is expected to be presented next year, and it will change the M35i designation to the new M40 index.

New design in the Neue Klasse style

Despite the heavy camouflage, the changes are immediately noticeable. The coupe-crossover will receive an appearance in the Neue Klasse style, which echoes the iX3 and X5 models. As seen in the photos, the massive radiator grille is gone — replaced by narrow and tall double “kidneys”.

The new grille is framed by updated headlights and a redesigned front bumper. The latter looks less aggressive and features more restrained vertical air intakes.

Profile and rear

The designers seem to have barely changed the car’s profile, although new side skirts are visible on the prototype. It also features 20-inch Individual 869i wheel rims, complemented by a high-performance braking system with blue calipers.

The rear of the car has undergone fewer changes. You can see new graphics for the taillights and, presumably, narrower reflectors. The bumper is also new — instead of a hexagonal cutout for the license plate, a more traditional solution has been used.

Interior: Panoramic iDrive

The only published photo of the interior suggests that the model will feature a display spanning the entire width of the front panel near the base of the windshield. This is a characteristic feature of the Panoramic iDrive system. It is expected to be complemented by a 17.9-inch multimedia system and a new steering wheel.

Technical specifications and power

Details regarding the powertrain remain a mystery for now. As a reminder, the current X2 M35i version is equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 312 hp (233 kW) and a torque of 400 Nm. The engine works in conjunction with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and an all-wheel drive system.

This configuration allows the coupe-crossover to accelerate to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds, with a top speed reaching 250 km/h. The new X2 M40 version will likely have slightly more power and will be somewhat faster.

The update of the X2 lineup is part of BMW’s strategy to transition to the new Neue Klasse design code, which is gradually being implemented across various brand models. The change of index from M35i to M40 may also indicate a slight increase in power, allowing the model to compete with more powerful versions of the Audi SQ2 and Mercedes-AMG GLA 35. It is worth noting that the manufacturer has decided to abandon the massive grille, which caused mixed reactions on previous models, in favor of a more restrained and elegant style.
