Toyota Expands Its Electric Lineup in Europe
Toyota continues to develop its electrification strategy in Europe by adding new models to its range. Among them are the updated bZ4X, the new C-HR+, and the fully electric Urban Cruiser, which debuted in December 2024. This model, developed for the subcompact crossover market, will begin reaching customers in the autumn of 2025.
Shared Platform with Suzuki
The Urban Cruiser, despite the similarity in name to the Yaris Cross Hybrid, is built on the Suzuki Heartect-e platform, not on Toyota’s own e-TNGA architecture. The exterior and interior design also share much in common with the Suzuki eVitara, although Toyota has added its own elements, such as a hammer-shaped light signature and an updated bumper.
“Despite the shared features with Suzuki, the Urban Cruiser fits harmoniously into the Toyota lineup thanks to its massive front end and darkened headlights.”
Interior and Technical Specifications
The model’s length is 4,285 mm, making it larger than the Yaris Cross but more compact than the C-HR. Thanks to the electric platform, the Urban Cruiser has a wheelbase of 2,700 mm, providing more space for rear-seat passengers. However, cabin height is limited due to the installed sunroof and the battery under the floor.
Technical specifications include two battery options (49 kWh and 61 kWh) and three drive options. The longest range – about 400 km – is offered by the front-wheel-drive version with the larger battery. The all-wheel-drive model with two motors delivers 182 hp, but the range is reduced to 350 km.
Historical Context of the Name
The name Urban Cruiser is not new for Toyota – it was previously used for a 2006 concept and for a model based on the Yaris, which was sold in Europe from 2008 to 2014. In some markets, including India, Suzuki also released cars under this name. The new electric version, while having some off-road features, is primarily focused on urban use.
Along with the Urban Cruiser, Toyota is preparing to launch updated electric models, such as the bZ4X and C-HR+, which will significantly expand its presence in the European electric vehicle segment. This is part of the brand’s overall strategy aimed at meeting the diverse needs of buyers – from compact urban crossovers to larger family models.
