Cadillac’s Most Popular Model May Unexpectedly Get a Rival from Volvo

Volvo is Exploring the Possibility of Creating a Large SUV

American buyers prefer large cars, and local manufacturers meet this demand by offering massive models like the Cadillac Escalade. Now, the Swedish brand Volvo may also join this segment, as it is discussing the development of a full-size, three-row SUV for the US market.

Official Comments from Management

During a media briefing in Stockholm, Volvo Cars CEO Håkan Samuelsson confirmed that the company is exploring the possibility of creating a larger SUV than the current XC90. This model could compete with the Cadillac Escalade, Mercedes-Benz GLS, and BMW X7. He emphasized that the project has not yet received final approval.

“Larger SUVs are something we are exploring,” stated Samuelsson.

Demand in the US and Chinese Markets

These considerations are taking place against the backdrop of Volvo reviewing its long-term product strategy, especially for the US, where demand for large family SUVs remains high. China also shows steady interest in premium vehicles of this class. Statistics indicate that 11% of EX90 owners who are switching cars are choosing full-size SUVs, which is the highest rate in the model’s history.

Production Plans and Technologies

Simultaneously, Volvo is working on creating a new generation of hybrid cars at its plant in South Carolina. Samuelsson did not confirm whether this specific model would become the potential flagship but hinted at its appeal to American clients. The new vehicle is expected to feature a hybrid powertrain with an electric-only range of about 100 miles.

Possible Platform and Technical Base

The future SUV, which could be named the XC100, might be built on the SPA2 architecture or utilize resources from its parent company, Geely. Geely’s premium electric brand, Zeekr, already unveiled a three-row hybrid SUV, the 9X, in 2025, opening possibilities for technological exchange.

Comparison with Competitors

The Zeekr 9X, with a length of over 5 meters and a wheelbase of about 3.2 meters, already belongs to the full-size class. Its dimensions are competitive even compared to the extended version of the Cadillac Escalade ESV. This makes this platform a serious candidate for creating Volvo’s future flagship SUV.

Volvo’s decision to enter the oversize SUV market could be a strategic step to strengthen its position in key regions. It also reflects the general trend among automakers to update and expand their lineups, even in segments that have not traditionally been their main focus. The success of such a project will depend on the successful combination of signature Scandinavian design, advanced environmental technologies, and the qualities – space and status – that buyers value in this class of vehicles.
