The Rarest Electric Hatchback from VW Costs More Than a Golf R

Volkswagen Introduces Limited Edition ID.3 GTX Fire+Ice

Volkswagen’s electric vehicles are getting retro touches. Although the brand plans to use the GTI name for its future sports electric vehicles, they have released a special version with the short-lived GTX badge. This model, named Fire+Ice, serves as an intermediate step before the transition to the new nomenclature.

The production version differs slightly from the concept – instead of a glossy finish, a metallic Ultra Violet color is used. However, unique details have been preserved: a special logo on the spoiler, transparent matte stickers on the pillars, a red stripe on the roof, and corresponding inscriptions on the sides. The 20-inch Locarno alloy wheels feature anodized accents that match the body color.

Interior and Technical Features

The interior is executed in a two-tone scheme: red on the driver’s side and blue on the passenger’s side. The designers have kept the decorative lightning bolts on the seats as a reference to the concept. Other features include contrast stitching and special ambient lighting.

The equipment includes sport seats with a massage function, a heads-up display, a Harman Kardon audio system, and an extended package of driver assistance systems.

The technical specifications remain unchanged: two variants of the electric motor are offered, with 282 or 322 hp. The more powerful version accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds. The 79 kWh battery provides a range of up to 591 km according to the WLTP standard.

Historical Context

The new model pays homage to the 1990 Golf Fire and Ice, created in collaboration with designer Willy Bogner. Back then, 16,700 cars were sold, exceeding the planned 10,000. The modern version will be produced in a limited series – only 1,990 units, making it even rarer than the original.

The pricing policy emphasizes the model’s exclusivity: in Germany, the ID.3 GTX Fire+Ice costs €8,795 more than the standard GTX version. For comparison, the petrol Golf GTI Clubsport is priced at €49,280, and the Golf R at €55,000. Thus, the new electric model becomes the most expensive version of the ID.3 in the lineup.
