New Lotus Emira 420 Sport: Even more power and sporting spirit
Lotus is preparing a new supercar “Esprit” for 2028, but for those who don’t want to wait, a younger model has been created – the Emira 420 Sport. The British manufacturer decided that the standard Emira was not sufficiently focused on performance, so engineers added more power, reduced weight, improved aerodynamics, and installed retro louvres on the rear window.
Key specifications:
Power and performance
Although V6 enthusiasts may be disappointed, the new model does not feature the 400-hp engine from Toyota, but rather a boosted 2.0-liter turbocharged AMG motor. If the Turbo SE version had 360 hp, the 420 Sport produces 414 hp (420 PS). Torque has increased from 480 Nm to 500 Nm. Acceleration to 100 km/h takes just 3.9 seconds, and the top speed reaches 299.4 km/h.
Important: A manual transmission is not provided for this version. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic.
Lightness and handling
For maximum driving intensity, an optional Lightweight Handling Pack is available. It reduces the car’s weight by 25 kg thanks to:
- Adjustable Multimatic dampers.
- Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.
- Titanium exhaust system (saves 6.5 kg).
- Lithium-ion battery (saves 12 kg).
Design and aerodynamics
The appearance of the 420 Sport has become more aggressive: a new splitter, enlarged air intakes, widened sills, and vents on the wheel arches. The main highlight is the louvres on the rear window, which reference the legendary Lotus Esprit Turbo from the 1980s. Thanks to aerodynamic refinements, downforce has increased by 25 kg without increasing drag.
Price and competitors
In the UK, the price starts at £105,900, significantly higher than the £89,500 for the Turbo SE version. In the US, the cost is $122,900, making it nearly $13,000 cheaper than the base Porsche 911 Carrera and more than twice as cheap as the 911 GT3.
Interestingly, Lotus is gradually moving away from Toyota and AMG engines in favor of new 3.0-liter V6 engines from Horse Powertrain, but for now, the 420 Sport remains the pinnacle of the four-cylinder Emira lineup. This decision allows the brand to offer customers a unique combination of lightweight design, high power, and nostalgic styling that direct competitors lack. Given the limited production run and track-day orientation, this model will be a true collector’s find for enthusiasts of British motorsport.
