Ram Expands the Power Wagon’s Capabilities
Ram has listened to fans’ requests and is implementing significant updates. After bringing back the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 engine, they are now adding a diesel powertrain to the 2027 Power Wagon model.
This update has been long overdue, as diesel engines and heavy-duty trucks are a classic combination. Until now, buyers had to make do with the gasoline-powered 6.4-liter Hemi V8.
The New Diesel Engine from Cummins
The heart of the new model is the familiar 6.7-liter inline-six-cylinder Cummins turbo diesel. Its power output is 430 horsepower, and torque reaches an impressive 1,075 pound-feet. The engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and a standard four-wheel-drive system.
This significantly enhances the vehicle’s capabilities. If the gasoline version with a maximum towing capacity of 10,590 pounds was good, the diesel variant can pull nearly 20,000 pounds.
The main competitor remains the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 ZR2. Although the diesel Chevrolet has a power advantage (470 hp), it falls short of the new Ram in torque (975 lb-ft).
Preserving the Classic Character
Despite the new engine, this is a classic Power Wagon. The vehicle is offered in a Crew Cab configuration with a 6-foot-4-inch bed. External features include black bumpers, flared fenders, 20-inch wheels with 34-inch tires, as well as a sport hood and side graphics.
Key off-road attributes remain untouched: underbody protection, robust axles, electronic locking differentials on both axles, and a specialized suspension with Bilstein shocks. Ground clearance is 12.6 inches, ensuring excellent approach and departure angles.
Interior Equipment and Availability
In the base configuration, the interior features a heated cloth bench seat and a six-speaker audio system. Also present are a trailer brake controller and the 12-inch Uconnect 5 multimedia system.
For those desiring more comfort, numerous options are available: heated and ventilated leather seats, a panoramic sunroof, a 14.5-inch infotainment screen, wireless charging for two devices, and premium audio systems.
The diesel Ram 2500 Power Wagon will go on sale in the second half of 2026. The starting price, including all fees, will be $88,470.
The appearance of a diesel version in the Power Wagon lineup is a strategic move that responds to specific demands in the heavy-duty off-road market. This model has traditionally been positioned as a powerful tool for work and recreation, but the limitations of the gasoline engine regarding towing left a niche for competitors. The new engine not only eliminates this shortcoming but also makes the vehicle significantly more competitive in its segment, where torque is often more important than absolute power. This also shows that manufacturers continue to refine traditional technologies while simultaneously developing electric and hybrid directions, indicating a diversity of strategies in modern automotive manufacturing.
