Next C63 Model from AMG Ditches Four-Cylinder Engine, But V8 Does Not Return

Engine Changes in the Mercedes-AMG C63

Mercedes-AMG has confirmed that the C63 model will transition from a four-cylinder engine to an inline six-cylinder. Although it is not yet known whether the new version will be a hybrid or exclusively an internal combustion engine, this move could significantly improve the car’s performance and bring it closer to its competitors.

Official Confirmation and Plans

Rumors about the engine change have been circulating for several months, and now a member of the Mercedes board of management for sales and marketing, Matthias Geiser, has confirmed that the transition to an inline six will happen for the next generation of the C-Class. He noted:

We will have some options where we previously used a four-cylinder engine, and now we will offer a six-cylinder. It might be a hybrid, or maybe a pure internal combustion engine. We will announce the details when the time comes.

Technical Features and Expectations

The 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine is already used in models such as the CLE 53 and E53 AMG. In the CLE 53, it produces 442 hp thanks to an auxiliary 48-volt mild-hybrid system, while in the E53 AMG, when combined with a plug-in hybrid setup, the power reaches 603 hp. Although these figures are lower than the 671 hp of the current hybrid C63 S version, they can still provide impressive dynamics, as demonstrated by competitors such as the BMW M3.

This change could be a turning point for AMG, as the current four-cylinder version, despite its power, has been controversial due to the departure from the traditional V8s that previous generations of the C63 were famous for. The transition to a six-cylinder engine is likely to satisfy brand enthusiasts who expect a more classic approach to performance and sound from AMG.
