Toyota’s Next Engine Could Eclipse the Legendary 2JZ in Tuners’ Hearts

New Toyota G20E Engine: Potential Up to 600 HP

Amid the general trend towards electric vehicles, some manufacturers continue to improve internal combustion engines. Toyota is developing a new family of engines, among which the 2.0-liter G20E has the potential for up to 600 HP – nearly 300 HP per liter.

“With a larger turbo, over 600 HP is easily achievable,” stated Toyota engineers.

Technical Features and Prospects

It is still unclear whether such an engine will comply with environmental regulations. Japanese media reported that the 600-horsepower version might be limited to racing applications. The G20E is part of a new line of naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines with a displacement of 1.5-2.0 liters.

The engine could become the heart of future Toyota sports models – the revived MR2 and Celica. They are expected to receive the G20E paired with a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed robotic transmission. The new engine features widely spaced cylinders, which opens up possibilities for increasing the displacement.

Toyota has confirmed the compatibility of the new engines with carbon-neutral fuel, which will allow them to remain on the market even after bans on traditional gasoline units are introduced. Even if Toyota does not officially release a 600-horsepower version, tuning studios will certainly realize this potential.

The development of powerful internal combustion engines alongside the development of electric vehicles indicates Toyota’s diversified approach to the future of the automotive industry. This is especially important for markets where the infrastructure for electric vehicles is not yet sufficiently developed.
