The Next Stage for Japan’s Favorite Sports Wagon May Hide an Unexpected Powertrain

Subaru is Preparing an Updated Levorg

Despite its focus on the US market, Subaru continues to develop models specifically for Japan. One of them is the Levorg – a sports wagon that, according to rumors, is due for an update in 2026. The car is expected to retain its dynamic design but will receive a hybrid version.

The first generation Levorg appeared in 2014, the second – in 2020. If Subaru adheres to its six-year update cycle, the next version could debut in the fall of 2026. According to Japanese sources, this will not be just a facelift, but possibly even a new generation.

Expected Changes

The new Levorg will likely get a more aggressive design with sharper lines and a more squared-off profile. Dimensions may increase: length – to 4,780 mm, width – to 1,820 mm, and height – to 1,480 mm. The platform will most likely remain the same, but with updates.

The interior is expected to feature an upgraded EyeSight safety system and an updated digital instrument cluster. The main novelty could be a hybrid powertrain based on Subaru’s 2.5-liter boxer engine and an electric motor from Toyota. The turbocharged 1.8-liter engine may also be retained.

The price in Japan could start from ¥4.3 million ($29,100). The main market will remain Japan, but the model will also be supplied to Australia, New Zealand, and some countries in Southeast Asia. For North America, where crossovers are preferred, the Levorg is unlikely to be available.

Subaru continues to experiment with hybrid technologies, and the Levorg could become another step in this direction. At the same time, the preservation of the classic wagon design shows that the company is not abandoning its traditions even in the era of SUV dominance.
