Audi may revive the TT model, which was discontinued in 2023, in the form of an electric sports car. This new model may use the same powertrain as the electric Porsche Boxster and Cayman. Despite the interest in electric sports cars, Audi still considers that internal combustion engines are better suited for track models. Not long after reports emerged that the R8 works on the same engine as the Lamborghini Temerario, information appeared that the TT may also return. However, while it is expected that the future R8 will remain traditionally with internal combustion, the next generation TT might be fully electric.
It might even become an affordable alternative to the Porsche Boxster and Cayman EV from Audi. At Audi congresses, like many Western automakers, there is a strong reliance on its rich heritage. The original TT remains a key source of inspiration for the company’s new creative director, Massimo Frascella. When asked about the possibility of reviving the “TT” name, Audi CEO Gernot Döllner said it was “conceivable,” adding, “but we take a broad view of what is possible.”
Döllner confirmed that new sports cars are indeed part of Audi’s future plans. “I believe that Audi should definitely have a sports car,” he said.
“It is part of the brand, and we need to find the right way and moment to integrate it into our lineup.”
Although the automaker’s CEO did not confirm that the TT would return as an EV, he noted that an electric sports car for daily use would fit the brand. However, he pointed out that sports models focused on the track are likely to remain with internal combustion engines – for now. “If we are talking about true racing track cars, in my opinion, the only way to go until now is with an internal combustion or hybrid engine,” I remark. “But if it’s more for everyday use on regular roads, I would definitely see a transition to the electric vehicle era. In the long term, there will be room for fully electric sports cars, not for the track, but for trips through the Alps or for fun on a rural road.”
If Audi does decide to return and launch it as an EV, it is likely many components developed for the all-electric Porsche Cayman and Boxster model may be shared.
However, Porsche seems to have challenges ensuring that its electric sports cars measure up to the legendary status of their internal combustion predecessors. Nevertheless, if any brand can create an attractive electric sports car, it’s Porsche, and Audi would be wise to leverage this experience.
