BMW M Division Could Create an Off-Roader
The BMW M division, known for its high-performance road cars, is considering entering the market for rugged luxury off-road vehicles. The division’s head, Frank van Meel, hinted that the brand is open to the idea of creating a model inspired by the Dakar rally.
This information confirms previous rumors about a new flagship BMW off-roader that could rival the Mercedes G-Class. The M-badged version would have a completely different character than the existing XM and would be positioned against models like the AMG G63 and Land Rover Defender Octa.
I can imagine the letter M on off-road products, because when it comes to motorsport, there are not only WEC and IMSA, but also Dakar.
Does the Idea of an M Off-Roader Contradict the Brand’s Image?
Van Meel acknowledged that the brand currently lacks a specialized off-roader for challenges like Dakar. While the X5 model is capable of light off-road driving, the high-performance X5 M version is oriented towards paved roads.
I don’t think an M off-roader is a contradiction because, if you look at the Dakar race cars, they are also very high-performance vehicles. So, if such a segment existed, I wouldn’t say “no”.
The executive also clarified that other high-performance brand designations, such as CS and CSL, will not be applied to off-roaders. These indices will remain exclusive to low-slung coupes, sedans, and wagons, as they symbolize weight reduction and track-oriented aerodynamics.
The New Model Could Replace the XM
These comments point to a model that is not yet in BMW’s portfolio and which could eventually replace the XM. The new rugged off-roader is expected to appear in 2029, with its production established in South Carolina.
BMW is keeping the details secret, but internal sources report that the model will use a unibody platform shared with the future generation X5, rather than a ladder frame. This architecture is expected to support a wide range of powertrains and could be complemented by a robust suspension and specialized off-road technologies.
The design will likely be executed in the Neue Klasse styling, but with more aggressive and rugged features. Protective cladding, underbody protection, significant ground clearance, and large wheels with capable tires can be expected.
We hope BMW won’t make us wait until 2029 to see the first images of the new model, especially considering it might debut earlier as a concept car. Four years is too long to wait.
Expanding the M lineup with an off-roader could be a logical step in the modern market, where demand for luxurious and capable adventure vehicles continues to grow. This would allow the brand to reach a new audience and strengthen its position in the competitive battle with other premium manufacturers who already have similar products. The success of such a vehicle would depend on whether BMW M can combine its legendary dynamics with genuine off-road capability, without compromising on luxury and technology.
