Incredible Cars That Attract Thieves, and Models They Steer Clear Of

The Most Stolen Cars in the USA

According to research, powerful sports cars remain a primary target for thieves. The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 stands out even among other models – its risk of theft is almost twice as high as that of the Acura TLX, which took second place. The standard version of the Camaro is also in the top three with a rate 13 times higher than average.

“Muscle cars often top this list because thieves are attracted to high-horsepower vehicles,” said Matt Moore, head of the insurance company HLDI.

Why Are These Models Chosen?

Besides powerful engines, a problem for GM has been the vulnerability of security systems. In particular, thieves actively use key cloning to steal Camaros and Sierra/Silverado series pickups. Additionally, nine of the 20 most stolen models belong to the General Motors conglomerate, including the Cadillac Escalade.

Against this backdrop, Hyundai and Kia have significantly improved the security of their vehicles after a wave of thefts in recent years. However, about 40% of owners still have not installed the updated security system, which is why the risk of theft for these cars remains five times higher.

Electric Vehicles – The Least Popular Among Thieves

In contrast, the Tesla Model 3 has the lowest theft rate – 100 times lower than the average. Overall, eight of the 20 safest models are electric cars, confirming thieves’ habit of avoiding modern technologies in favor of traditional internal combustion engines.

Interestingly, the security improvements at Hyundai and Kia have had a noticeable effect – their models have completely disappeared from the top 20 most stolen cars. However, overall statistics indicate that thieves still prefer old schemes, primarily choosing American muscle cars and pickups.
