The long-awaited Land Cruiser FJ has finally debuted, and Toyota has once again shared a series of sketches that reveal the creative journey that led to its creation. Judging by these images, the inspiration for the compact off-roader was an object far from the automotive world.
Toyota’s Design Philosophy
Toyota designers are known for starting with the fundamental form of the vehicle before focusing on small details. Early sketches clearly show this philosophy, depicting a futuristic concept defined by its cubic silhouette, softened angles, and wide glass surfaces.
Source of Inspiration
Their muse, as it turned out, was an ordinary gaming die. Its pure geometry was stretched, given four wheels, and set upright so its flat faces could become the glass part of the roof.
From Concept to Reality
From there, designers added horizontal fender elements over the open wheels, a sturdy frame, and a space at the front for the powertrain. The steel protection at the rear also serves as a mount for the full-size spare wheel, completing the evolution from a gaming element to an off-road machine.
Although the first iteration looked too wild for series production, its simple geometry provided a blueprint for subsequent steps. Later sketches introduced more conventional off-road proportions along with stylistic elements from the Land Cruiser heritage.
Heritage Traits and Modern Technologies
The slanted edge of the hood, the vertical stance, and the round headlights framing the square radiator grille all refer to previous generations. Toyota also experimented with futuristic LED configurations, which later evolved into two different headlight variants. Another sketch depicts the evolution of the rear lights, which protrude from the sides and feature C-shaped LED graphics.
Concept vs. Production Model Differences
Of course, the glass area of the production car is significantly smaller, but the rear window retains a shape similar to the dice-inspired concept. The same applies to the cubic front fenders and the body trim throughout.
Interior and Its Features
Inside, the same geometric logic continues. Several layered, box-like shapes form the dashboard, storage areas, center console, and door panels. Several sketches even show mounts for additional equipment. We can also see a version without a screen, although the production model has a conventional digital instrument panel, at least in the high-quality trim shown during the presentation.
Openness of Automakers
A look behind the scenes of the design studio is always interesting. Fortunately, automakers like Toyota and General Motors have become more open about their creative process, offering the public a rare glimpse into how ideas are formed.
The development of the Land Cruiser FJ demonstrates how traditional brand values can be combined with innovative approaches, ensuring the model’s relevance in the modern market. The use of modular solutions in design opens up possibilities for future modifications, which could be key to attracting different categories of buyers.
