This model is of strategic importance to the Italian brand, as it is the first electrified offering and allows entry into the compact SUV market. However, not everyone was satisfied – representatives of the Carabinieri union expressed complaints regarding the vehicle’s road behavior.
Additionally:
At the beginning of the handover of the Tonale to the police, the company promised an increased level of comfort for officers. However, in practice, attention focused not on comfort, but on the vehicle’s handling.
Official Complaint Due to Handling Issues
The Carabinieri union appealed to the Rome prosecutor’s office, citing numerous complaints from employees about the vehicle’s improper road behavior. The main grievances concern performance at high speeds and on uneven surfaces – conditions regularly encountered by patrol cars during operational calls.
The appeal mentions “serious concerns for the safety of employees” who are forced to use a vehicle that could “compromise the effectiveness of their work.” The union demands an official investigation to verify the vehicle’s compliance with service requirements.
General Secretary of Unarma, Antonio Nicolosi, stated: “We cannot allow our colleagues to work in dangerous conditions. It is the administration’s duty to provide safe and reliable vehicles. We will not stop until the situation is clarified.”
Alfa Romeo’s Position
As reported by the publication Quattroruote, the manufacturer firmly rejected the accusations and hinted at possible lawsuits. A brand representative stated: “Alfa Romeo confirms that all our vehicles meet the highest safety standards and undergo thorough testing by police units, including the Italian Carabinieri.”
Additionally:
The company also emphasized that the model’s “advanced safety systems” have received positive feedback, and the crossover itself “has earned the trust of over 100,000 customers worldwide.”
Despite the criticism, the manufacturer is ready to cooperate with the authorities but simultaneously reserves the right to “defend the company’s reputation by all legal means,” which could lead to legal proceedings.
Features of the Police Version Tonale
Alfa Romeo
The service modification features partial armor and special livery. In 2023, the Carabinieri received the first units equipped with additional gear: flashing beacons, a police radio, and a compartment for special equipment. An isolated compartment for detainees is also provided.
The vehicle received a 1.5-liter hybrid powertrain with 158 hp, the same as the civilian version. It is unknown if the complaints are related to the lack of enhanced performance – the grievances mostly concern chassis behavior. The additional weight of the armor and the high ride height could affect handling, although these features are inherent to most SUVs.
Recent Rollover Incident
Photos of an accident involving a police Tonale that rolled over after hitting a curb at night appeared on social media. According to reports, one officer sustained serious injuries and was taken to a hospital in Catania.
Besides the Tonale, the Carabinieri also operate the Giulia model, including the powerful Quadrifoglio version, nicknamed “The Gazelle.” The fleet also includes Fiat Tipo, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and other vehicles from the Stellantis group. Alfa Romeo recently presented a police version of the compact Junior, which is being supplied to municipal units.
