Volkswagen’s Electric Sports Car Concept
Volkswagen once developed an electric sports car concept that was intended to be part of the ID lineup. The design was inspired by the SP2 model from the 1970s, and the project itself was conceived back in 2017. This was revealed by the company’s representative, Štepán Rehak.
The concept featured a retro-futuristic design with clean lines, strong proportions, and bold graphics. The car was planned to be built on the MEB platform. The front end resembled the SP2 with a compact emblem and narrow headlights, while the body combined sharp angles with rounded wheel arches.
This concept pays homage to Giugiaro’s style: clean surfaces, strong proportions, and bold graphics.
Among other features were aerodynamic wheels, a sporty roof, retractable door handles, and an LED strip for the rear lights. The SP2, which inspired the designers, was produced in Brazil with a 1.7-liter engine producing 64 horsepower.
Although the concept was never realized, it demonstrates that Volkswagen was experimenting with the idea of an unconventional electric sports car even before the advent of modern ID models. It could have become an interesting alternative in the brand’s lineup, especially for fans of retro design. Such sketches often become the basis for future production cars, so it is possible that individual elements of this concept will appear in new models.
