Incorrect seat covers can disable airbags in an electric vehicle

Recall of new Lucid Gravity electric crossovers due to safety issues

The electric vehicle manufacturer Lucid Motors has announced a recall of a batch of its flagship Gravity crossovers for the 2026 model year. The measures concern a limited batch of 66 vehicles. The reason for the recall is not related to serious technical components, such as the suspension or electric drive, but can directly affect passenger safety.

The essence of the problem lies in incorrectly marked seat back covers, which were supplied by Piston Interiors in September 2025. During assembly at the Hyundai Transys plant, workers discovered that some covers intended for the driver’s seat were marked for the passenger side.

Why did a simple marking error become the reason for the recall?

Although a marking error may seem like a minor bureaucratic oversight, in the context of modern safety systems it becomes critical. The design of the seat cover is closely linked to the deployment mechanism of the side airbags. If a cover designed for a specific side is installed incorrectly, it can disrupt the trajectory or even block the operation of the airbag during a collision, increasing the risk of injury to the driver or passenger.

Lucid estimates that approximately 39.4 percent of the 66 vehicles in question may actually have this defect.

The incident was first discovered in late October when Hyundai Transys informed Lucid of the error. A joint investigation revealed the source of the problem at the supplier Piston Interiors, which immediately implemented enhanced 200-percent production checks to eliminate similar situations in the future.

What actions is the company taking?

In early November, Lucid conducted an inspection of its own inventory and determined that 66 vehicles already delivered to customers could be affected. This led to the official recall announcement on December 3.

Owners of the affected vehicles will receive a notification from Lucid no later than February 6, 2026. The company will replace all incorrectly marked seat back covers free of charge. Furthermore, Lucid is offering compensation for expenses that owners may have incurred to independently fix the problem before receiving the official notification.

For additional information, customers can contact Lucid’s support service. This case, despite its limited scale, clearly demonstrates how complex and interconnected modern automotive safety has become. The reliability of systems designed to save lives can depend even on such seemingly minor details as a correct label on an interior part.

Similar recall incidents often become a test of the manufacturer’s speed of reaction and transparency. Lucid appears to be acting quite promptly: the problem was detected by the supplier during assembly, which allowed for quick tracing of the supply chain and assessment of the scale. Importantly, the company will not only replace the parts but also cover any possible prior expenses of the owners, which is good practice for maintaining customer trust, especially for a relatively new brand in the competitive premium electric vehicle market. This situation also highlights a general trend in the automotive industry: the increasing complexity and number of electronic and safety systems makes the manufacturing process vulnerable even to minor errors in the supply chain, which, however, can have serious consequences.
