The Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2 Balboni is not an ordinary Italian supercar. It belongs to a small group of models where power is delivered only to the rear wheels, reminiscent of the good old days of the Diablo. Although the company released many special versions of the Gallardo over ten years, the LP550-2 is considered the most outstanding.
This model was created in honor of Valentino Balboni, Lamborghini’s chief test driver, whose name this rear-wheel-drive car bears. Despite its history and rarity, one of the specimens in Giallo Midas color did not meet its reserve price at auction, stopping at just $119,452.
Only 250 of these special Gallardos were made, each one a tribute to Balboni. The main feature? A 5.2-liter V10 that sends power exclusively to the rear axle, making it the first rear-wheel-drive Lamborghini since the Diablo.
A six-speed manual transmission was also available, which was so loved by car enthusiasts. However, this yellow model is equipped with the automated e-gear, which likely reduced its appeal and value.
The History of This Gallardo
This LP550-2 was listed for auction on Cars & Bids with approximately 22,500 miles (36,210 km) on the odometer and a clean Carfax history. The current owner has possessed the car since August 2017 and even obtained the autograph of Valentino Balboni himself on the dashboard and engine cover.
Contrasting white and black stripes run through the center of the body, and a similar color scheme continues in the interior, which is dominated by two-tone leather. Although the interior looks outdated compared to the Huracan or the new Temerario, it remains comfortable.
At the time of its launch in the USA, the price of the Gallardo LP550-2 Valentino Balboni started at $225,000. All 250 units were quickly sold out, which prompted Lamborghini to release a similar model called the LP550-2. If not for this, the value of the Balboni could have been higher, as it remained the only rear-wheel-drive Gallardo.
Despite some shortcomings, this version remains one of the most desirable among the Gallardos. If you are looking for a rear-wheel-drive Lamborghini with history, this option could be the perfect choice. Although it’s worth remembering that models with a manual gearbox are still valued higher.
