Updates for the Nissan Frontier: New Sport Edition Package
For many years, the Nissan Frontier has remained something of a “dinosaur” in the mid-size pickup segment. While competitors are actively introducing turbocharged four-cylinder engines, massive touchscreens, hybrid systems, and luxurious interiors, Nissan continues to offer a naturally aspirated V6, a body-on-frame construction, and a simple but reliable approach.
For the 2027 model year, the company is reinforcing this image with a new Sport Edition package, which allows regular Frontier buyers to get a piece of the PRO-4X style without the need to purchase the full off-road version.
Exterior and Equipment
In other words, this is a pickup that looks like it is capable of serious off-roading, even if it actually cannot do so. Does that make it a choice for posers? Possibly. Does it make sense for Nissan to offer such a version? Absolutely, yes.
To be fair, in addition to standard all-wheel drive, this package adds useful off-road equipment. It includes black 17-inch off-road wheels shod in Hankook Dynapro all-terrain tires size 265/70R17, as well as an aluminum engine skid plate, LED fog lamps, and front accent lighting.
Visually, the package borrows heavily from the PRO-X and PRO-4X versions. This includes a black lower front bumper, a black grille, black mirrors, and special “Sport” badges on the sides and tailgate. Inside, Nissan added yellow contrast stitching to distinguish this version from the regular SV.
This is entirely logical. Buyers want their pickup to look tough. Every brand that sells pickups offers a trim level or package heavily oriented toward off-roading. Until now, Nissan had the Pro-X, Pro-4X, and the Roush Pro-4X. The new Sport model is aimed at those at the other end of the Frontier’s price spectrum.
Specifications and Market
Under the hood, nothing has changed, and depending on your point of view, this is either good or a missed opportunity. Every 2027 Frontier is still equipped with a 3.8-liter naturally aspirated V6 engine producing 310 horsepower (231 kW) and 281 lb-ft (381 Nm) of torque. The engine is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and can tow up to 7,150 lbs in appropriately equipped configurations. All-wheel drive is not standard.
It is nice that the Frontier is available in King Cab and Crew Cab configurations with two bed length options. Prices have not been announced yet, but Nissan reports that the 2027 Frontier will arrive at dealerships later this summer.
Thus, Nissan continues its strategy of offering a time-tested powertrain and body-on-frame construction, while adding visual elements that appeal to the modern buyer who values a stylish and rugged appearance. This allows the brand to remain competitive in a segment where many are betting on technological innovations, but not forgetting the basic needs of customers who want a reliable and simple vehicle.
