Nissan suspends production of an electric car based on its European best-selling model

Development Halt of the Electric Nissan Qashqai

The Nissan Qashqai is the brand’s best-selling car in Europe, so it was not a big surprise when the company announced plans to create an electric version in 2023. However, like several other electric vehicles, this project has been quietly suspended.

Citing six informed sources, Reuters reports that the company has halted development of the model. According to sources, the project was frozen in early 2025, and this appears to be a consequence of Nissan’s large-scale restructuring.

The company’s “Mobility Intelligence for Everyday Life” plan involves optimizing the model lineup and eliminating 11 models. When the strategy was announced, the company stated it was “abandoning low-performing models and redirecting investments into growth areas.”

New Models on the Horizon

While the model lineup is shrinking, several new cars are appearing on the horizon, including the new Xterra, Skyline, and Juke EV. The latter was introduced as a “key model for Europe that combines bold, expressive design with full electrification and intelligent features.”

Reasons and Prospects

The article hints that the project was halted due to cost issues, but it seems the idea of an electric Qashqai may not be completely dead. However, two sources told the publication that if the program is revived, the model likely won’t reach the market before the early 2030s.

The automaker declined to comment on the vehicle’s status in a statement to Reuters but noted that they are committed to expanding their electrified model lineup. At the same time, they noted that there is “significant instability” in demand for electric vehicles in Europe, so they are adhering to a “balanced” electrification strategy.

This suggests that the freezing of development might not be related to money, but to a lack of demand. In any case, Nissan does not seem very interested in creating an electric Qashqai at this time.

This situation reflects broader trends in the automotive market, where many manufacturers are revising their electrification plans due to demand uncertainty and economic challenges. For Nissan, which is in the process of restructuring, the priority is to focus on the most promising models, such as the Juke EV, instead of risky investments in projects that may not meet expectations. The company’s lack of a clear position regarding the Qashqai EV leaves room for speculation, but it is obvious that in the coming years, buyers should not expect a fully electric version of this popular crossover.
