Nissan and Infiniti postpone the launch of new electric crossovers
Companies Nissan and Infiniti have postponed the production of two new electric crossovers by 10 months. The launch of the Nissan model is now expected at the end of 2028, and Infiniti – at the beginning of 2029. This decision is related to the cancellation of the $7500 tax credit program for electric vehicles.
The US President signed a law that provides for the termination of tax benefits for electric vehicles already on September 30, instead of the previously planned 2032. This has forced many automakers to reconsider their electrification plans.
We have made a strategic decision to slightly adjust the production schedule of our electric vehicles at the Canton plant. Our goal is to ensure that this enterprise continues to produce highly competitive cars that will exceed customer expectations
Details about the new models
Nissan previously announced an “off-road SUV” that was to appear at the end of the 2027 financial year. Infiniti planned to introduce its version in 2028. Preliminary images show that the Nissan will get a more cubic design, reminiscent of the Xterra, while the Infiniti will be focused on luxury and will get smoother lines.
This delay is another blow for Nissan, which was one of the pioneers of the electric vehicle market with the Leaf model. Earlier, the company had already abandoned the development of electric sedans and a compact crossover for the American market.
The cancellation of tax incentives could significantly affect the pace of electrification in the US. Many manufacturers, including Nissan, will have to adapt their strategies to the new conditions, which may lead to further changes in plans for the launch of new electric models. This is especially true for premium brands, where the cost of cars is traditionally higher.
