Digital artist imagines the return of the BMW 6-Series
The BMW 6-Series coupe was discontinued in favor of the 8-Series, which will also soon cease to exist. However, interest in this model among enthusiasts has not faded. One digital artist, known as Sugar Design, has created a concept for a modern return of the 6-Series in the form of a mid-size two-door coupe from the Neue Klasse era.
The concept combines features of the 4- and 8-Series, creating an elegant silhouette. It follows the design approaches of the Vision Neue Klasse concept, but with a more exotic and aggressive look. Currently, BMW does not confirm any plans to revive the 6-Series name.
Front and rear design
The front of the digital concept borrows heavily from the BMW i3, particularly the thin LED headlights integrated into the illuminated kidney grille. However, this 6-Series looks wider and lower. It has received sharper air intakes in the bumper, a more pronounced “shark nose,” and larger alloy wheels to enhance aggressiveness.
The car’s profile is executed in a clean style with clear references to the Vision Neue Klasse concept. Although the proportions may not align with the classic canons of early models, the overall stance looks impressive and quite exotic.
The rear clearly borrows from the limited-edition Skytop convertible, which itself is built on the 8-Series Coupe platform, similar to the Speedtop wagon. This is evident in the wide, sculpted rear fenders, razor-thin rear lights, and the crisp edge of the trunk lid. Even the diffuser looks serious, completing the sporty image.
Assumed technical specifications and platform
The artist did not detail the powertrain, but everything in this concept points to a fully electric configuration. The proportions and surface treatment suggest the car is built on BMW’s Neue Klasse platform, likely sharing key components with the smaller i3 and iX3.
Historical context of the 6-Series model
The digital concept appeals to the 50th anniversary of the original E24 generation (1976–1989), which is still widely considered the most beautiful 6-Series of all time, although compared to modern successors, this may not be the highest bar.
The name returned in the Bangle era with the E63 model (2003-2010), followed by the F13 (2011-2018), also available in Cabrio (F12) and Gran Coupé (F06) variants. BMW also introduced the unrelated five-door liftback version, the G32 6-Series GT (2017-2023), which had a relatively short lifespan.
Potential role in BMW’s modern lineup
The independent designer suggests that a Neue Klasse-based 6-Series could take on the role of both the 4-Series Coupe (G22) and the 8-Series Coupe (G15). This is similar to how the Mercedes-Benz CLE replaced the C-Class and E-Class coupes and convertibles.
Such an approach could simplify BMW’s lineup and help reduce development costs, while still retaining a larger, more premium coupe in the range.
However, it is hard to say whether investing resources in such a niche segment is justified, especially when the electric successor to the 4-Series Coupe will likely satisfy the needs of most buyers. The rendering demonstrates the desire of part of the community to see bolder and more emotional forms in the electric era, where design is often subordinated to aerodynamics. This work highlights that even in a world of utilitarian crossovers, there is still a place for cars that first and foremost captivate the eye and evoke emotions, continuing BMW’s tradition of grand touring.
