Mazda introduced the updated CX-5 last year, and now the company has announced that its base price will be $29,990 excluding a $1,495 destination fee. This is $940 more expensive than the previous model, making it only $90 more expensive than the similar CX-50 crossover.
Base Trim Overview
Ignoring model overlap, the lineup starts with the base CX-5 2.5 S trim. Mazda didn’t provide many details, but it is known that the crossover received LED lighting and 17-inch wheels. It’s worth noting that the updated model is 4.5 inches (114 mm) longer than its predecessor and has a 3-inch (76 mm) longer wheelbase.
Inside, drivers will find a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.9-inch multimedia system with integrated Google. The display also supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, but via a wired connection.
Other features of the base version include a leather-wrapped steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, and an eight-speaker audio system.
Despite its base status, the S trim includes a whole range of standard driver assistance systems, among which are traffic sign recognition and Mazda Radar Cruise Control with speed assist function. The crossover also has blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert with pedestrian detection, and an emergency lane keeping function. Other notable safety features include an automatic emergency braking system, exit warning, as well as a rearview camera with dynamic guidelines and trailer hitch guidance.
Select Trim
The CX-5 2.5 S Select trim priced at $31,990 is worth the extra cost as it includes a set of popular features. Among them are seats with a combination of cloth and leatherette, wireless smartphone charging, and a keyless access system.
Buyers will also find an auto-dimming rearview mirror, illuminated sun visors, rear air vents, and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. These are complemented by tinted windows, as well as heated side mirrors with an automatic folding function.
Preferred Trim
The mid-level CX-5 2.5 S Preferred trim starts from $34,250 and is distinguished by the presence of roof rails and larger 19-inch wheels. The model also has a power liftgate and a heated windshield wiper de-icer.
Updates continue inside, where heated front seats and a heated steering wheel have appeared. The driver’s seat has 10-way power adjustment and a memory function. Buyers also get a color head-up display and a built-in Homelink module for opening garage doors.
Premium Trim
Customers looking for more luxury can choose the Premium trim for $36,900. It is executed in a dark theme with black accents and 19-inch wheels with a black metallic finish. The model also received a panoramic glass roof and upgraded lighting fixtures with “signature illumination.”
The interior features heated and ventilated front seats with leather upholstery and power adjustment on both sides. The crossover also has heated rear seats, an ambient LED interior lighting system with color choice, and a premium 12-speaker Bose audio system. These are complemented by USB-C charging ports for the rear row and support for SiriusXM satellite radio.
Top Premium Plus Trim
At the top of the model range is the CX-5 2.5 S Premium Plus trim, which will cost $38,990. It adds a hands-free power liftgate and an adaptive front lighting system. Buyers also get a larger 15.6-inch multimedia system, paddle shifters, and a driver personalization system.
Even more importantly, the crossover receives a traffic jam and highway assist system with lane change assist function. It combines adaptive cruise control with lane centering, as well as the capability for automatic lane changes. The latter can be activated by using the turn signal, and the car will execute the maneuver when it is safe to do so.
This is a long-awaited addition, and the system combines with driver monitoring and front cross-traffic alert/braking. A surround-view camera system is also present.
Engine and Future Hybrid Version
Regardless of the chosen trim, all models are equipped with a 2.5-liter gasoline four-cylinder SkyActiv-G engine, which produces 187 hp (139 kW) and 186 lb-ft (252 Nm) of torque. It is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and a standard all-wheel-drive system.
In 2027, Mazda will offer a hybrid powertrain based on the new SkyActiv-Z engine. The company is not revealing many details about this version but promises that it will provide “a higher level of performance and fuel efficiency.”

The Mazda CX-5 update for the 2026 model year demonstrates a gradual but noticeable evolution of the model, which remains one of the key players in the compact crossover market. The price increase is part of a general trend in the automotive industry, but Mazda is trying to compensate for this by expanding standard equipment, especially in the safety sphere. The minimal price difference between the CX-5 and the more off-road-oriented CX-50 is interesting, which could create additional competition within the brand itself. The wait for the hybrid version, which will appear only a year later, may delay some purchases, but for those looking for a proven vehicle with a traditional engine, the update looks solid. The model’s success will depend on how well it can withstand powerful competition from both Japanese and Korean manufacturers, who are also actively updating their lineups.
