New BMW Electric Coupe SUV Aims to Compete with Tesla Model Y

Electric BMW iX4 Spotted During Testing Ahead of Official Premiere

The new electric BMW iX4 crossover, which is the sporty version of the iX3 model, was captured by spy camera lenses during road tests in Europe. The car is expected to debut later this year.

Sporty Coupe-Crossover Design

The exterior of the iX4 inherits key features from the new iX3, including the vertical “double kidney” grille and new horizontal headlight graphics. However, differences begin further on, dictated by the coupe-like silhouette.

The model features a more steeply raked windshield that flows smoothly into a sharply sloping roofline. This sporty concept led to the appearance of new doors and a significantly reduced glass area. A rounded shoulder line, contrasting with the squared-off wheel arches, is also noticeable.

Unique Rear End and Interior

The rear of the car is completely unique: it is equipped with a special spoiler with an integrated third brake light. The crossover also differs from the iX3 by the absence of a rear wiper. Familiar taillights, similar to those on the iX3, can be guessed under the camouflage.

The interior, which could not be photographed, is expected to replicate the iX3’s cabin. A panoramic iDrive display system spanning the entire width of the dashboard is anticipated, including a 17.9-inch multimedia system, a futuristic steering wheel, a 3D head-up display, and an intelligent personal assistant.

Technical Specifications and Performance

Under the hood, or more precisely at its base, the most powerful iX4 50 xDrive version is expected to receive an all-wheel-drive system with two electric motors. Their combined output may reach 463 hp and 645 Nm of torque.

This powertrain will allow the crossover to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (0-96 km/h) in approximately 4.7 seconds. The top speed will be limited to 130 mph (210 km/h).

The energy source will be a 108.7 kWh lithium-ion battery. According to the official WLTP cycle, it is expected to provide a range of up to 500 miles (805 km). The system supports fast charging with a power of up to 400 kW, allowing the battery to be recharged from 10% to 80% in just 21 minutes.

It is expected that the iX4 model line will expand over time with additional variants, which will be introduced after the announcement of new derivatives based on the iX3.

The emergence of the BMW iX4 clearly indicates the Bavarian brand’s strategy regarding the electrification of its entire lineup, including niche and sporty models. This step not only fills the gap between conventional crossovers and full-fledged coupes but also directly targets the market dominated by the Tesla Model Y. The success of the iX3, which received positive reviews for its balance of comfort and dynamics, creates a solid foundation for the iX4. The latter, offering an even more expressive design and likely improved dynamics, could become a more attractive choice for those who value individuality and driving feel, without wanting to give up the benefits of electric transport and the practicality of a crossover.
