New Hyundai Electric Model Separates from Ioniq Lineup

It seems Hyundai presents new electric cars every time, but this model is special. Elexio is a purely Chinese development, created jointly with BAIC Motor. It is equipped with modern technologies and capable of traveling over 700 km without recharging.

The crossover premiered in Shanghai, where it was introduced under a new name, different from Ioniq. Technical details have not been disclosed yet, but the car’s dimensions are likely more compact than its counterparts for other markets.

The design of the Elexio is radically different from other electric models of the brand. The front end lacks a radiator grille, and the LED headlights are integrated with sporty air intakes. The side profile stands out with sculpted fenders and dark trim on the pillars. The rear is adorned with an LED light bar and large model name lettering.

The interior has not been shown yet, but the manufacturer has announced a “smart” cabin without physical buttons with a new digital instrument panel. The multimedia system will run on a powerful Qualcomm SA8295 processor. The interior is executed in a minimalist style with a large number of storage compartments. The car will receive a Level 2 driver assistance system complex.

Technical Specifications

The crossover is built on the E-GMP electric platform used by Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis. Specific engine parameters are not yet known, but the platform supports both single- and dual-motor configurations.

Battery capacity has not been disclosed, but the claimed range exceeds 700 km according to the Chinese CTLC cycle. The battery supports fast charging: from 30% to 80% in 27 minutes. The battery design meets safety requirements for collisions.

Production and Prospects

Elexio will be produced at Beijing Hyundai facilities, and sales in China will begin soon. Information about export is currently unavailable.

At the beginning of the year, Hyundai invested $1.1 billion in the joint venture with BAIC. This will allow developing electric vehicles specifically for the Chinese market and increasing exports. Against the backdrop of fierce competition with local manufacturers, Hyundai hopes to regain its position thanks to new models like the Elexio.
