New Honda Prelude with 417 Miles Ends Up in Junkyard, Not Waiting for the First Sold Unit, and This Is Not the Only Case

New Model Already Reaching Junkyards

The new Honda Prelude appeared on the American market just a few months ago, but already a growing number of these cars are being seen for sale at salvage yards after accidents.

Sales and Accident Statistics

Since the sales launch in December of last year, Honda has sold 969 new Preludes in the USA: 174 in December, 216 in January, 299 in February, and 280 in March. Apart from the two completely destroyed units reported earlier, at least five more accident-damaged cars are currently known across the country.

Someone crashed their new Prelude without even driving 300 miles, and they are not the only one.

First Example: White Prelude with 417 Miles

The first unit, listed on the IAAI auction, is painted white. It was involved in an accident with only 417 miles (671 km) on the odometer and sustained serious front-end damage. The bumper is missing, one headlight is gone, the driver’s side fender is dented, and the windshield is shattered. The description states that the car still starts and drives, however, restoration will be costly, especially considering that parts for the new model are likely very scarce right now.

Second Example: Black Prelude with 1,841 Miles

A second Prelude was also listed for sale by IAAI at their Seattle branch. This black car had 1,841 miles (2,962 km) on it and is claimed to also start and drive. It also suffered a severe frontal impact, crumpling the bumper and hood. It’s impossible to tell if the driver hit someone or someone hit them. In any case, all airbags deployed, and the car requires serious repairs to return to the road.

Third Example: Bright Blue Prelude with 3,806 Miles

The Copart auction also listed a damaged bright blue Prelude for sale. Its mileage is 3,806 miles (6,125 km), and the left side of the car received a strong impact, leaving significant dents. The description does not specify if the car is operational, but a power steering error is visible on the instrument panel. If this issue is resolved and a new rear body section is installed, the repair could be relatively straightforward.

These cases may indicate low availability of parts for the new model on the secondary market, which significantly complicates and increases the cost of repairs even for relatively minor damage. For owners, this means that insurance payouts for a total loss may turn out to be more beneficial than attempts at restoration, which partially explains the appearance of such new cars at salvage auctions. The situation may change as sales volumes grow and parts supply chains are established.
