New Compact Hyundai Hatchback Model Receives Sharp Angles and a More Rigid Design

New Details of the Next-Generation Hyundai i20

A prototype of the Hyundai i20 has been spotted during testing in the hot climate of Europe. This hatchback is likely to receive a new generation in 2027, which will include an updated design language. The next i20 is expected to retain an internal combustion engine but with more electronic components.

Updated spy shots from Spain show the next-generation Hyundai i20 prototype with less camouflage on the front end. The hatchback now features full-width daytime running lights, reminiscent of the Chinese XPeng P7 sedan, framing a square honeycomb-shaped radiator grille. The sharp angle at the top of the A-pillar even recalls the Cybertruck design, echoing the angular style language introduced in the Hyundai Santa Fe. Other visible changes include crossover-style wheel arches, updated mirrors, and new LED rear lights.

Continued Development in the Small Hatchback Segment

Hyundai continues to develop the small hatchback segment, and the i20 is preparing for a new generation. The first prototype was spotted during testing in Europe, confirming the retention of internal combustion engines.

Fresh images from Spain indicate a complete redesign, unlike the i30, which received a third facelift. This gives designers more freedom to apply the brand’s latest style, resulting in a more square appearance compared to the previous model.

Updated Exterior

The front features new LED headlights, positioned slightly lower in the bumper, framing a reduced radiator grille. On the sides, instead of complex body lines, smoother surfaces have appeared, while flatter pillars and a raised beltline add a slight crossover touch.

The rear remains heavily camouflaged, but signs of updated rear lights and a temporary exhaust pipe are visible. This confirms that the model will not become electric, although rumors persist about a zero-emission version on a different platform.

Expected Interior Changes

Significant changes are also expected inside: an updated dashboard, a more modern digital system, and new materials borrowed from Hyundai’s electric models.

Details about the platform remain unknown, but the car will likely be built on an updated version of the current base. Powertrains will continue to include mild-hybrid technology, although stricter Euro-7 emission standards may encourage further electrification.

Potential for the i20 N

As for the hot i20 N hatchback with a 1.6-liter turbo engine, it was excluded from the European lineup due to emissions. It is expected to return in the new generation but with a hybrid powertrain. As a result, the base N version will lose the manual transmission option but will likely gain more power.

Release Date and Competitors

The current i20 was introduced in 2020 and received a minor facelift in 2023. The next generation is expected in mid-2026, with a market launch likely in 2027.

Competitors for the new Hyundai i20 will include the recently updated Renault Clio, Citroen C3, Peugeot 208, Opel Corsa, Lancia Ypsilon, the trio of Volkswagen Polo, Skoda Fabia and Seat Ibiza, the Chinese MG 3, and the Japanese Toyota Yaris.

Given the trends towards reduced emissions and the growing popularity of electric vehicles, Hyundai seems to be trying to find a balance between traditional technologies and new market demands. This could be the key to maintaining a position in the competitive small car segment.
