New Ram Dakota Warlock Model Set to Challenge Hilux with Chinese Technology

Return of a Legendary Name

Ram has introduced a new mid-size pickup model called Dakota for South American markets, reviving the legendary name. After showcasing the Dakota Nightfall concept, Stellantis has revealed the production version that will arrive in Argentina and Brazil.

Key Features of the Newcomer

Stellantis has finally revealed all details about the new Dakota pickup, publishing official photos and information we’ve been expecting after a series of teasers.

Warlock Trim and Interior

The model launches in the top Warlock trim, which includes black branding, unique decals, 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, and a sporty hoop bar. Despite individual details, the exterior and roofline reveal the shared platform with Fiat Titano, Peugeot Landtrek, and Ram 1200, all of which have Chinese origins.

Technical Specifications and Equipment

The interior features soft-touch materials and an upgraded digital panel compared to sibling models. It combines a 7-inch digital instrument cluster with a 12.3-inch multimedia system screen. Standard equipment includes wireless phone charging, six airbags, a 360-degree camera, and a suite of ADAS systems.

Chassis and Powertrain

The vehicle uses a Chinese-produced ladder frame with updates introduced last year on the Changan Hunter model. A hybrid powertrain is not planned – the Dakota will receive a 2.2-liter Multijet turbodiesel engine producing 197 hp with 450 Nm of torque. The engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive with a low-range gear, electronic rear differential lock, and four drive modes (Normal, Sport, Sand, Snow).

Dimensions and Competitive Environment

The Dakota’s length exceeds the 5,028 mm of the frame-based Ram Rampage, approaching the 5,331 mm of the Fiat Titano. This makes it a direct competitor to the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Chevrolet S10, and Volkswagen Amarok in the regional market.

Useful Characteristics and Production

The manufacturer confirmed a payload capacity of 1,020 kg, a cargo bed volume of 1,210 liters, and a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 kg. The rear compartment will feature special coating and LED lighting. Production is deployed at the Stellantis plant in Córdoba (Argentina) following investments of 2 billion Brazilian reals. Sales will start first in Argentina, and from 2026 – in Brazil.

Prospects for the US Market

While this Dakota version is intended exclusively for South America, Stellantis is simultaneously developing a different mid-size pickup for the US, scheduled for launch in 2027. The American model will have a frame construction and gasoline engines to compete with the Ford Ranger, Toyota Tacoma, and Chevrolet Colorado.

The mid-size pickup market in South America continues to grow, and the arrival of the Ram Dakota could significantly shake the positions of traditional leaders. The use of a Chinese platform allows for a competitive price, while the diesel powertrain remains a key advantage for the region. Separately, it’s worth noting that the decision to use different models for different continents will allow Stellantis to more accurately account for the specific requirements of each market without design compromises.
