New Zhengzhou Nissan Z9 pickup with hybrid setup
The Chinese market is offering increasingly affordable and technologically advanced pickups, and the new Zhengzhou Nissan is a prime example. The Z9 GE PHEV has become the hybrid version of a model previously available only with gasoline and diesel engines.
The base version with an internal combustion engine starts at ¥119,900 ($16,600), while the hybrid version starts at ¥156,900 ($21,800). This is significantly lower than most competitors in the midsize pickup segment.
Technology and features
The Z9 impresses with its level of equipment for its price category. Standard features include a 12.8-inch multimedia screen and a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel. Higher trims offer a 14.6-inch touchscreen, leather seats with heating, ventilation, and massage functions, as well as a 12-speaker audio system.
The model comes with a Level 2 driver assistance system, surround-view cameras, and a unique “transparent hood” feature.
Specifications and options
The hybrid setup combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine with an electric motor, offering either 322 or 429 horsepower. Both variants deliver 800 Nm of torque. The vehicle is available with rear-wheel or all-wheel drive.
The base 17 kWh battery provides 60 km of electric range, while the more powerful 32.85 kWh battery increases this figure to 135 km.
For comparison, the Nissan Frontier in the U.S. starts at $32,050 without any electrification. The Chinese offering appears far more attractive in terms of price-to-capability ratio. The model could become an interesting option for markets outside China, though there is no talk yet of a U.S. launch.
Despite its aggressive pricing, the Z9 GE PHEV offers a level of comfort and technology previously available only in significantly more expensive models. This may force competitors to rethink their strategies, especially in markets where price is a decisive factor.
