Update: After its initial appearance in Chinese patent applications, Toyota has published full information and images of the compact Frontlander SUV. A full overview is provided below. You can also check out our test drive of the 2026 Corolla Cross model for the North American market.
Popularity of Compact SUVs
Compact SUVs have become a staple in many global lineups, offering an optimal balance of size, practicality, and price. Few models exemplify this formula better than the Toyota Corolla Cross. Developed for various markets, it faces unique challenges in China, where regulations require foreign automakers to sell locally produced versions through separate joint ventures.
This is how the Frontlander emerged, serving as GAC Toyota’s equivalent for the Chinese market to the Corolla Cross produced by FAW Toyota. Both models have now reached the midpoint of their life cycles, receiving a refreshed design, updated technology, and the same powertrain options as before.
New Front End with More Expressive Character
While the FAW Corolla Cross inherits the design of the recently updated global model, the GAC Frontlander has its own identity at the front. The sharp nose is similar to the GR Sport version of this crossover available in Europe and Japan, but the lower part of the bumper replaces the massive grille with an EV-inspired design.
A body-colored insert improves airflow, leaving only a small cooling opening, along with another lower section finished with glossy trim elements.
The LED headlights look identical to those fitted on more expensive versions of the Corolla Cross in other markets, although base models receive the older headlights. The rest of the body remains identical to the previous Frontlander version, except for the updated graphics on the rear lights in higher trims.
Interior with a Focus on Technology
Significant changes are also present inside. The dashboard has been redesigned, gaining a more premium and high-tech appearance. Key changes include a significantly larger 12.9-inch infotainment display, the removal of physical buttons, slimmer air vents, and the addition of ambient lighting. There is also an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, redesigned seats, and a more elegant center console with wireless charging. Furthermore, the equipment includes an updated Toyota Safety Sense suite of safety systems.
The Frontlander has a length of 4,490 mm, a width of 1,825 mm, and a height of 1,625 mm, with a wheelbase of 2,640 mm. These dimensions are identical to the updated Corolla Cross, meaning the new SUV has become 5 mm longer compared to the pre-facelift version.
Hybrid Remains in the Lineup
Despite the EV-inspired design, the compact crossover remains available with gasoline and hybrid powertrains—just like its predecessor. The non-electrified 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine produces 169 hp, driving the front wheels via a CVT. A slightly improved hybrid combines a 2.0-liter gasoline engine (156 hp) with a 111 hp electric motor and a ternary lithium-ion battery, transmitting power to the front wheels via an E-CVT.
The updated Toyota Frontlander is priced from ¥132,800 to ¥155,800 for the non-electrified version, while the hybrid version ranges from ¥145,800 to ¥165,800. This makes it significantly more expensive compared to its predecessor, which was recently available at a discounted price of ¥89,800.
The Corolla Cross was first introduced in 2020 and has since become one of Toyota’s most successful models. In 2024, it ranked third among the world’s best-selling cars with 859,000 units sold, which is 18% more than in 2023. This places it ahead of the Corolla sedan and hatchback, although it still trails the larger RAV4, which continues to lead in global sales.
The price increase for the Frontlander may be related not only to the update but also to the general trend of rising car costs due to technological improvements and market changes. Demand for compact SUVs remains high, allowing manufacturers to set more premium prices, especially in markets where consumers are willing to pay for additional features and improved design.
