Presentation of the new MGU9 pickup for the Australian market
The British-Chinese brand MG has introduced its first pickup for the Australian market – the MGU9. The model is developed based on the Chinese Maxus/LDV Terron 9 but has received a number of unique features to compete in the midsize pickup segment.
Exterior Appearance and Features
Externally, the MGU9 inherited most of the body panels from its Chinese sibling but received a redesigned radiator grille with more chrome and the MG logo. The front bumper was also updated. One of the most interesting features became the electrically driven tailgate with an integrated folding step for convenient access to the cargo compartment, which can also be used as a bench with drink holders.
Innovative Technologies and Interior
The MG Smart Hatch system expands the cargo space thanks to a folding mid-gate and a lowering rear window. This option is only available for the top-tier Explore Pro trim. Inside the cabin, the gear selector, inspired by aviation design, which is unique to MG, draws particular attention. The cabin also includes a digital instrument panel with two 12.3-inch displays.
Technical Specifications and Suspension
Despite sharing a platform with the LDV Terron 9, MG’s Australian division claims the pickup was “specifically designed and tested for local conditions.” A key difference became the multi-link independent rear suspension, which promises better handling and comfort compared to the traditional leaf spring suspension.
Engine and Transmission
Under the hood of the MGU9 is a 2.5-liter turbo diesel engine from SAIC with 215 hp and 520 Nm of torque. The engine is paired with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission and BorgWarner all-wheel drive with a transfer case and electronically locking differentials on both axles.
Dimensions and Cargo Capabilities
The MGU9 has a length of 5,500 mm, a width of 2,265 mm, and a height of 1,874 mm with a wheelbase of 3,300 mm. The pickup can carry a payload of 770-870 kg and tow trailers weighing up to 3,500 kg.
Pricing Policy and Competitors
Pre-orders for the MGU9 are already available in Australia, with deliveries in the second half of 2025. The base Explore trim starts from 52,990 Australian dollars, and the top Explore Pro from 60,990 Australian dollars. The model enters a highly competitive segment dominated by the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux.
An interesting aspect is that the Maxus/LDV Terron 9 platform will find application in other regions – the future VW Amarok Hybrid for South American markets will also use a similar base but with a hybrid powertrain.
The appearance of the MGU9 on the Australian market marks an important step for the brand in expanding its presence in the world of commercial vehicles. The use of progressive technologies, such as the innovative tailgate and comfortable suspension, demonstrates MG’s desire to compete not only on price but also on technological solutions. The success of this model could determine the brand’s further strategy in other markets where demand for midsize pickups continues to grow.
