Toyota Unveils Hydrogen Rally Concept
Toyota continues to experiment with alternative fuels, developing not only hybrids and electric vehicles but also engines running on liquid hydrogen. The new concept is built in accordance with Rally2 requirements for the world rally championship.
Externally, the car features an aggressive design with wide arches and aerodynamic elements, but it is distinguished by unique livery and ventilation panels instead of standard side windows.
Technologies of the Future
Development took place in Finland, where the car was tested on both gravel and asphalt. Although precise technical specifications have not been disclosed, it likely uses a modified version of the 1.6-liter three-cylinder turbocharged engine.
The use of liquid hydrogen allows for almost zero emissions while preserving the sound and feel of a conventional engine, which is so important for rally fans.
The concept’s first showing will be at Rally Finland with world champion Juha Kankkunen behind the wheel. After the runs, the car will be displayed alongside other Toyota hydrogen developments, including the production Mirai and the Tundra prototype.
The company already has experience in creating hydrogen engines – since 2021, a modified GR Corolla with such an unit has been competing in the Japanese Super Taikyu series. There are also prototypes of hydrogen-powered SUVs and trucks being tested on public roads.
