New Level 2+ Autopilot Technology for VW’s MQB Lineup

Cars based on the MQB architecture will soon receive an upgraded Level 2+ semi-autonomous driving system.

The new system will be available in the coming years for several brands of the Volkswagen Group.

The system will include hands-free driving, traffic jam assistance, and auto-parking.

The MQB platform vehicles are preparing to receive a new level of safety measures thanks to collaboration with Valeo and Mobileye. This paves the way for an improved Level 2+ semi-autonomous driving system.

With the launch of this system in the “coming years,” safety and comfort improvements in high-volume vehicles are anticipated. This should be beneficial for consumers and the automaker alike, as procurement for multiple brands will be streamlined, leading to reduced costs and complexity, while allowing customers to take advantage of more advanced capabilities.

Since this system is still distant, details are limited. However, companies have reported that we can expect features on approved highway sections, as well as traffic jam assistance, auto-parking, 360° emergency assistance systems. This alongside “threat detection” and future capabilities such as support for augmented reality displays.

Even if somewhat unclear, it seems that we can expect eyes-on-the-road, hands-free driving on selected road sections at speeds up to 81 miles per hour (130 km/h). This will be accompanied by automatic lane changes for even more relaxed traveling.

These capabilities are supported by a “360° ring” of cameras, radars, and sensors. They will be combined with Mobileye’s new Surround ADAS platform, as well as the EyeQ 6 High processor and mapping technologies. This will be the first time all these components are integrated into a single system, and the companies stated that it will lead to the replacement of multiple control units with a centralized unit, which will help improve efficiency and performance.
