Expectations for Toyota Hilux Model Range Expansion
The new generation Toyota Hilux pickup was one of the most anticipated cars of the year, yet the updated lineup strangely lacks a wide-track version. Toyota representatives have practically confirmed that over time, the Hilux will receive the classic stance modification, while the return of the flagship GR Sport trim is being considered as a possibility in the future.
Visualizations of the Future Hilux GR Sport
Digital artist Theophilus Chin has created new renders depicting a potential Hilux GR Sport variant. The updated Hilux resembles a redesign of the previous model more than a completely new development. This means the central part of the car, including the doors and windows, remains virtually unchanged compared to the previous version.
In his works, Theottle integrated the new Hilux’s headlights, grille, bumper air intakes, fenders, tailgate, and rear lights into the GR Sport body, making minor adjustments to the plastic cladding and underbody protection. The result looks quite convincing thanks to the wider tracks and more powerful wheels.
Previous Versions and Competitors
The previous Hilux model offered various GR Sport trims depending on the region. The newest and most capable version appeared in 2023, receiving updated bumpers, widened fenders, raised and modernized suspension, as well as a slightly more powerful 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine producing 221 hp. While it couldn’t fully compete with the Ford Ranger Raptor, it posed competition to other off-roaders like the Nissan Navara Warrior.
Current Offerings and Future Plans
Currently, the new Hilux is available exclusively with one track width, unlike its predecessor which offered a wider track in the Rogue, Rugged X, and GR Sport versions. During the presentation in Australia, local media spoke with Nick Hogios, chief designer of Toyota Australia, regarding the potential expansion of the model range.
Regarding the wide-track version of the new Hilux, Hogios noted: “That’s probably in the future. But yes, we will get to that – for now, there are enough new features with this model.” The designer added: “From now on, it can only get better. We are constantly improving our product.”
When asked about creating a new Hilux GR Sport version, Sean Hanley, vice president of Toyota Australia for sales, marketing, and franchising, replied: “Not at this moment. But you never know what might happen. GR is an important part of our brand lineup.”
Current Flagship and Customization Potential
The current top version of the new Hilux in Australia is the Rugged X trim. This model retains the standard suspension and diesel engine but is equipped with various accessories for off-road travel, including a steel bumper with an integrated LED light bar and recovery points. Additional options are also available, such as a bull bar, snorkel, roof rails, a hood protective overlay, and headlight covers.
During the presentation of the new Hilux in Thailand, Toyota demonstrated various modified versions of the pickup, emphasizing its potential for customization. Among the presented off-road variants was a Hilux with parts from GR, proving that the Gazoo Racing division has already begun work on the new model.
Judging by the comments from company representatives, the expansion of the Hilux lineup is only a matter of time. Considering the popularity of wide-track versions among car enthusiasts and the active work of Gazoo Racing on new components, it can be expected that in the coming years the market will see both improved off-road modifications and more powerful engines aimed at strengthening competition with models like the Ford Ranger Raptor.
