New Toyota Yaris Cross Replaces Mustache with Honeycomb Grille

Popular Model Receives an Update

The Yaris Cross was Toyota’s best-selling model in Europe in 2025, with a figure of 200,000 cars, confirming the steady demand of Europeans for compact SUVs. However, the model has been on the market since 2021, and despite some updates at the end of 2023, it needed a serious facelift.

Toyota, aware of the fierce competition in the market, launched the updated Yaris Cross, focusing on a new front-end design, adding new colors and fresh interior trim options.

New Exterior

The key change in the exterior for the 2026 model was a completely new honeycomb radiator grille, painted in the body color. This solution is borrowed from larger models such as the Corolla Cross and RAV4.

The new front bumper received a cleaner design with a simpler plastic spoiler, a subtle aluminum underbody protection, and the absence of side air intakes. The headlights retained their shape but received new graphics for the LED daytime running lights in a ‘hammerhead’ style, now integrated into the main optics.

The rest of the body panels remained virtually unchanged. Similar updates have been applied to the GR Sport version, which has unique front and rear bumpers. The more off-road-oriented Trail version has not been shown yet.

The color palette has been enriched with the Precious Bronze shade in a two-tone configuration, and the new Persian Salt color replaced the former Shimmering Silver. In addition, Toyota introduced new alloy wheel designs up to 18 inches in diameter.

Interior Updates

The interior looks familiar, with the same 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 10.5-inch multimedia system, but the doors and dashboard received new platinum inserts. Corresponding platinum elements appeared on the sport seats, now installed in the Design trim, along with contrasting three-color stitching.

The most expensive Excel trim features seats upholstered with partial leather and SakuraTouch material, made from plant-based PVC, cork waste, and recycled polyethylene terephthalate. Power-adjustable mirrors are standard in all trims, while ambient lighting and wireless charging are added from the Design version and above. A power tailgate is standard for Excel.

The flagship GR Sport version has the coolest interior: seats are upholstered in suede-like material, red stitching and GR badges are scattered throughout the cabin, and ‘silver metallic’ colored inserts have appeared on the door cards and dashboard.

Safety systems have also been improved. The standard Toyota Safety Sense suite now includes a parking braking function for the Design trim and above, and blind-spot monitoring is available in the Excel and GR Sport versions.

Hybrid Powertrains

Under the hood, there are no changes: the Yaris Cross retains an exclusively hybrid powertrain lineup for Europe and Great Britain.

The most powerful Hybrid 130 setup, introduced at the end of 2023, develops a combined 128 hp and 185 Nm of torque, driving the front or all four wheels depending on the version. The base Hybrid 115 also remains in the lineup, with 114 hp and 141 Nm of torque.

The GR Sport version is available exclusively with the Hybrid 130 powertrain in a front-wheel-drive configuration and has a unique suspension tuning that promises “sharper and more engaging handling.” It is worth noting that all Yaris Cross trims received improvements in noise and vibration insulation for the 2024 model year, including thicker glass and better soundproofing.

Availability and Prices

Toyota confirmed that the updated Yaris Cross model range will be available to order in the UK market this autumn, including the Icon, Design, Excel, and GR Sport trims.

Prices for the UK and European markets will be announced later. As for the Japanese-specification Yaris Cross, it retains its previous appearance with minor updates for the 2026 model year.

The Yaris Cross update demonstrates Toyota’s classic approach to a facelift: noticeable but not radical design changes, an emphasis on interior quality and expanding standard equipment, while proven technical solutions remain untouched. This strategy allows maintaining interest in a popular model without risking losing recognizability and customer loyalty. Preserving the hybrid lineup also underscores the company’s priority in the European region, where environmental standards and demand for economical cars remain high. The success of the updated model will depend not only on design but also on competitive pricing in the context of intense competition in the compact crossover segment.
