The new GR Sport SUV version will not become better just because of a start button and paddle shifters

Toyota has introduced a new sport version of its compact crossover Raize, which received the GR Sport designation. This model received aggressive exterior styling and an updated interior but retained the same technical specifications as the regular version.

Update for Southeast Asian Markets

The new Raize GR Sport version belongs to the lineup of affordable compact off-roaders aimed at Southeast Asian markets. The car is built on the same platform as the Daihatsu Rocky and Subaru Rex models, highlighting the close collaboration between these brands. The exterior update for the Raize appeared shortly after the facelift of the Daihatsu Rocky, which also received a new grille and bumpers. Since both models have remained virtually unchanged since their debut in 2019, such cosmetic changes serve as a mid-lifecycle refresh.

Exterior and Interior of the Sport Version

The GR Sport trim gives the crossover a sharper look thanks to a redesigned front bumper with a pronounced spoiler and integrated underbody protection. The car rides on 17-inch black alloy wheels, and small decals are placed on the C-shaped pillars. The rear received a GR Sport badge and bumper extensions with a small diffuser under the license plate. Optional accessories include carbon-look side mirrors, side window visors, door handle protectors, and side moldings.

The car’s interior is executed in black tones with contrast stitching; the headliner also received black upholstery. Equipment includes a 9-inch multimedia system screen, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, and a full suite of ADAS driver assistance systems. The steering wheel with the GR Sport logo received paddle shifters and a button to activate the “power” mode. Additionally, one can order GR logos on the gear selector and door sills, as well as accessories such as a cabin air freshener and a cargo net.

Technical Specifications Remain Unchanged

Despite the visual changes, the Raize GR Sport model did not receive any updates under the hood. It remains with the same turbocharged 1.0-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine producing 97 horsepower and 140 Nm of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels via a CVT automatic, which likely limits any real effect from the available “power” button. Toyota’s promotional materials speak of “high acceleration,” but with such technical indicators, this is more of a wish than a promise.

Standard Suspension and Market Positioning

Unlike most GR Sport models worldwide, which typically include suspension or steering tuning, the Raize retains its standard configuration. No changes have been made to the chassis, brakes, or handling characteristics. Essentially, it is a well-equipped top trim in sporty attire. In Indonesia, the Toyota Raize GR Sport costs from approximately $17,200 to $18,700 USD, making it the most expensive in the lineup. This price is also higher than that of the Daihatsu Rocky with the same engine and transmission, which could be an important factor for buyers comparing offers.

The appearance of the Raize GR Sport clearly demonstrates Toyota’s current strategy regarding the use of the Gazoo Racing image brand. Instead of genuine sport modifications, the company offers markets focused on affordability primarily visual packages. This allows increasing the model’s appeal and its price without investing in expensive technical upgrades. A similar approach is characteristic of many manufacturers, especially in markets where buyers pay more attention to appearance and equipment than to dynamic characteristics. In the case of the Raize, buyers get a stylish, well-equipped crossover that, however, remains the same in terms of driving qualities as the base versions.
