Innovative Airbag Capable of Radically Improving Motorcyclist Protection

New Airbag for Motorcycles from Toyoda Gosei

Toyoda Gosei is developing a special airbag for motorcycles that can significantly enhance rider safety. A crash test has recently been completed, confirming the system’s effectiveness. In 2023, 6,335 motorcyclists died in the USA — the highest figure in the last 50 years.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that over 30 years, airbags have saved about 50,000 lives. However, motorcyclists have still not had access to similar technologies. Toyoda Gosei is using its experience in automotive safety to bring the product to market as quickly as possible.

We are working on an airbag with a high level of protection that can be installed in the limited space of a motorcycle.

Although the exact launch timeline is unknown, the company has already conducted tests using real vehicles. The images show that the airbag deployed successfully during a collision between a motorcycle and a car. This system is designed to absorb part of the impact energy, reducing the risk of injury.

Approximately 360,000 riders of two- and three-wheeled vehicles die in road accidents every year. Toyoda Gosei is analyzing test results and plans to use both simulations and real-world trials to further refine the technology. According to experts, ensuring the safety of motorcyclists is a more complex task compared to cars due to the lack of a frame and limited options for installing protective systems.

Recent data highlights the seriousness of the problem: in 2023 in the USA, motorcyclists had a 28 times higher risk of dying in an accident compared to passenger car drivers, and the probability of getting injured was 5 times higher. This underscores the need for innovation in safety for two-wheeled transport.
